Spreadtrum and uSens collaborates to release First AR Mobile Solution
The AR technology provided by uSens is based on monocular RGB cameras. The 14 nm 8-core 64-bit Intel Airmont architecture processor enables Spreadtrum SC9853 to reach 1.8 GHz in dominant frequency
Spreadtrum Communications, a semiconductor company working towards 2G, 3G, and 4G wireless communications standards has released the first AR (Augmented Reality) smartphone engine.
The AR engine has been developed in partnership with uSens, a pioneer in HCI, inside-out tracking solutions for augmented and virtual reality and caters to the mainstream market. The AR engine has been showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018 in Las Vegas.
An outcome of the joint development between the duo, the AR system is based on the Spreadtrum SC9853I chipset platform. It is built into the default Spreadtrum camera library and can recognize stable and smooth AR camera effects.
The 14 nm 8-core 64-bit Intel Airmont architecture processor enables Spreadtrum SC9853 to reach 1.8 GHz in dominant frequency. The company says that the AR engine provides efficient mobile computing performance and enables low power waste management. The AR technology provided by uSens is based on monocular RGB cameras. It is claimed to give a position accuracy of up to 1mm. This Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) is inside the 6DOF positional tracking solution. It is designed through advanced machine learning and computer vision techniques to achieve high stability.
Compared with other AR solutions available only in top model devices in the market (ARKit by Apple and ARCore by Google), the Spreadtrum-uSens joint venture is said to provide algorithm with less restrictions for adaptive models. It also enables lower CPU utilization (only one-fourth of ARcore in tests).
The duo claims that themobile AR program runs smoothly in several high-end smartphones and also shows strong adaptability and stable performance in popular mainstream mobile phones.
The joint venture helps both companies to consolidate their own resources. The technical advantages of uSens will help to strengthen the strategic deployment of Spreadtrum in the field of AR mobile. Whereas Spreadtrum's mobile user base is considerable attraction for developers. This might generate more possibilities for the commercial applications of mobile AR technologies.
We are still to get our hands on AR mobile unit and are expecting some surprising results.
