Tata Group to Open New iPhone Assembly Plant in Tamil Nadu by 2024
Ratan Tata, Chairman of the Tata Group, has once again demonstrated his industry prowess. Tata Electronics, a subsidiary of the Tata Group, will inaugurate a new iPhone manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu by November 2024. This initiative is anticipated to boost employment significantly in the region.
Apple has been shifting its iPhone production away from China to other countries, with India being a major beneficiary. According to a Business Standard report, Apple plans to establish its fourth iPhone assembly unit in India by the end of this year.

Tata Electronics is setting up a new 250-acre factory dedicated to iPhone manufacturing. This facility will be developed with an investment of Rs. 6,000 crore and is expected to function like a small tech city. The project aims to create over 50,000 jobs, with a significant portion of these positions expected to be filled by women.
The Tata Group plans to incorporate various new features into this 250-acre smart city. Notably, small houses will be constructed for employees working at the new iPhone factory. This arrangement will make it easier for employees to commute daily without hassle.
Apple has been reducing its reliance on China for several years now. As part of this strategy, the company has started manufacturing parts and iPhones in countries like India, Thailand, and Malaysia. Apple began producing phones in India in 2017, initially through Foxconn near Chennai.
Last year, Tata Electronics acquired Wistron's Indian factory. This new facility will be the second location in India where iPhones are manufactured. With the Tata Group's entry into this sector, Apple can now produce more iPhones in India, which is expected to generate additional employment opportunities in the country.
The establishment of this new factory aligns with Apple's broader strategy to diversify its manufacturing base. By expanding its production capabilities in India, Apple aims to mitigate risks associated with over-reliance on any single country for its manufacturing needs.
This move also underscores India's growing importance as a global manufacturing hub for technology companies. The increased production capacity will not only meet domestic demand but also cater to international markets.
The new factory's establishment is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy by providing employment and boosting related industries. The creation of over 50,000 jobs will contribute significantly to economic growth and development in Tamil Nadu.
This initiative by Tata Electronics and Apple reflects a broader trend of multinational companies investing in India's manufacturing sector. Such investments are likely to drive technological advancements and foster economic development in the region.
Overall, the establishment of this new iPhone manufacturing plant marks a significant step forward for both Tata Electronics and Apple. It highlights their commitment to expanding production capabilities and creating job opportunities in India.
