Apple sets Revenue Record in India, Despite Slumping iPhone Sales Globally: Tim Cook
In a recent financial update, Apple disclosed a 10% drop in iPhone sales during the second fiscal quarter in 2024. The sales figures fell from $51.33 billion to $45.96 billion compared to the same period last year.
This downturn was particularly pronounced in China, where sales decreased by 8%. Apple's slower embrace of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, in contrast to rivals like Google and Microsoft, has been identified as a potential reason for consumers postponing their iPhone purchases.

Apple Global Sales Slump
Despite the dip in hardware sales, including a notable decline in iPhone revenue, Apple surpassed Wall Street's forecasts, leading to a stock value increase of over 6% after hours. This success was largely attributed to a 14% increase in services revenue from platforms such as iCloud, Apple TV+, and Apple Music, and a $110 billion stock buyback program.
CEO Tim Cook pointed out on an earnings call that after addressing the pent-up demand caused by COVID-related supply disruptions, particularly for the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, the company would have seen growth in March quarter revenue, absent last year's one-time impacts.
New Revenue Record Set in India
Cook also highlighted Apple's strong performance in the Indian market, citing it as a key focus area and mentioning the opening of new stores and expansion efforts. Looking ahead, CFO Luca Maestri expects continued double-digit growth in the services sector and iPad sales.
Apple plans to introduce two new iPads at an upcoming event, aiming to rejuvenate its tablet line which saw a decrease in sales from $6.67 billion to $5.56 billion year-over-year. The event will also showcase the M4 chip, marking the latest advancement in the Apple Silicon line.
Despite challenges, Apple remains optimistic about its spatial computing technology, embodied in the Apple Vision Pro headset. CEO Tim Cook expressed excitement for future products and developments in AI, hinting at potential integrations of technologies like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini in upcoming iPhones.
