Vivo to unveil smartphone with under glass fingerprint sensor at CES 2018

The CES 2018 (Consumer Electronics Show) is all set to debut tomorrow in Las Vegas. At the tech show, many companies are expected to make some major announcements and introduce new technologies that will emerge this year.

One such company is Vivo and it has officially announced that it will showcase a smartphone incorporated with the new fingerprint sensor technology on January 10. Vivo has taken to Twitter to tease that it will showcase the new fingerprint sensor technology. The teaser image makes it clear that it is the under display fingerprint sensor technology that will be showcased by the company at the CES 2018 show floor.

Given that the full-screen design trend is going mainstream, the demand for the under glass fingerprint sensors is massive. The reason is that the rear-facing fingerprint sensors are not welcome by most users and is considered to be an inconvenient way to unlock smartphones.

Synaptics launched the Clear ID FS9600 optical in-display fingerprint sensor for the smartphones, thereby marking a milestone in the fingerprint sensor technology. This specific fingerprint sensor is touted to be capable of detecting wet, cold, and dry fingerprints. Also, it appears to be well protected under the durable glass and is claimed to be resistant to water and scratches as well.

It has security features such as adaptive fingerprint template matching and authentication, and anti-spoofing technology too. The Clear ID is integrated with AES encryption and ECC authentication.

The mass production of the under glass fingerprint sensor from Synaptics debuted a few weeks back. Synaptics claims that the over 70 million units of this fingerprint sensor will be made available this year. The company has also announced that it producing the under glass fingerprint sensor for a smartphone manufacturer in the top five position but the name of the manufacturer it has teamed up with remains unknown.

However, the media reports point out that it could be Vivo. In fact, Vivo announced that it will be the first company to unveil a smartphone with the under glass fingerprint sensor in 2018. Also, the company revealed that its upcoming smartphone will feature the Synaptics' Clear ID sensor but the name of the phone was kept undercover.

Last week, a smartphone dubbed Vivo X20 Plus UD cleared the 3C certification in China and the suffix UD is claimed to represent Under Display. Apparently, it is believed that the X20 Plus UD will be the first smartphone to be launched with the under glass fingerprint sensor.
