Xiaomi working with TSMC for its Surge S2 chipset
Xiaomi doesn't want to give up on its Surge chipset series.
Xiaomi, back in 2016 officially showcased its in-house developed custom Surge S1 chipset. At the time, it came off as an ambitious step in the segment dominated by big manufacturers such as Samsung and Huawei. Sadly, the whole initiative died out soon. But, it seems the company hasn't given up on the idea yet. With it good market share and strong foothold, the company seems confident to take another go in the SoC department.
If the reports are to be believed, Xiaomi has been ordering big numbers from Taiwanese manufacturers and IT players such as Foxconn, Inventec, Largan Precision and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). A secret contract with TSMC details the Surge S2 chipset, that was rumored during this year's MWC, but is yet to be announced.
As per the reports, the new chipset will be based on TSMC's 16nm process and will have an octa-core design - four Cortex-A73 units, running at 2.2GHz and four Cortex-A53 ones, clocked at 1.8GHz. The reports also claim that there is no CDMA support in the Surge S2 spec sheet. Considering the spec sheet, this clearly isn't a flagship processor, but the suggested performance rating, it could be prove to be a successful chipset.
The report also claims that Xiaomi president Lin Bin recently called on Largan Precision to secure more production capacity for multi-lens modules to use in its high-end devices, throughout the second half of 2018. We will have to wait and watch how the company moves ahead with the production of the chipset. The company will definitely try to come in direct competition with major manufacturers in the market.
Besides, the company has also topped the Indian smartphone market. According to a new Canalys Research, Chinese smartphone Xiaomi shipped over 9 million units, giving it a market share of just over 31 percent, the highest ever for a vendor since Q1 2014.
It said that the Korean vendor shipped just under 7.5 million smartphones, growing by 24 percent on last year. Oppo took third place with 2.8 million shipments and Vivo fourth with 2.1 million shipments. Overall, the smartphone market in India grew at 8 percent to 29.5 million units for the quarter.
