Xiaomi Mi 4c unveiled: Top specs, features and competition

    After much rumors and conjectures, Xiaomi's highly cited Mi 4c smartphone has finally been unveiled by the company's CEO Lei Jun, in China. This is Xiaomi's new flagship smartphone added to the company's ‘Mi 4' series of smartphones, which already include the Mi 4 and the Mi 4i.

    There was already much known about the phone, furthermore, the company's top management including company CEO Jun and President Bin Lin, themselves confirmed some specifications of the device on their Weibo account.

    Key Specifications of the Xiaomi Mi 4C:

    As for specifications and feature details, the Mi 4c is a power packed offering that has seems to be replacing the Mi 4. The phone features a 5-inch display of Full HD quality, offering 1080x 1920 pixels resolution. The company says that the display is 10 percent more battery efficient than the display on predecessor, and comes with Sunlight Display tech for excellent visibility in bright conditions. Inside, the phone runs on 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor with hexa-core taking care of all the tasks and Adreno 418 GPU ensuring good graphics. As expected, the phone has been launched in two variants, one with 2RAM and 16GB Flash, and other with 3GB RAM and 32GB in-built storage.

    The talk points of the phone are camera and USB Type-C port, which have already been highlighted by the company in their previous teasers and posters. A day ahead of the launch of the phone, the company compared Mi 4c selfie camera with Apple's iPhone 6 to show the quality difference.

    This is not the first time that Xiaomi has been taking a dig at the Apple, as the company has earlier as well mocked at Apple. Anyway, the Xiaomi Mi 4c features a 13MP rear camera from Sony (IMX258) or Samsung (S5K3M2) with dual-LED, dual-tone flash super-fast autofocus (< 0.1s) feature. Up front, there is a 5MP 85 degree wide angle selfie camera, which is equivalent to a 24mm lens.

    The Xiaomi Mi 4c features USB Type-C connector which is lately seen on the OnePlus 2 as well. The C Type port is a reversible connector which is why it gets an edge over other connectors on phones, though it has its own challenges. The port comes with Quick Charge 2.0 fast charging, for instant battery charge. The phone ships with a 3,080mAh battery. In addition, the phone has a Built-in IR blaster that supports 2000+ appliances, including DSLR cameras.

    Speaking of software, the phone runs Android 5.0 Lollipop wrapped under MIUI 6 version, but will soon be upgraded to MIUI 7 version. The native UI brings a plethora of customizations and features, like Double Tap to power on the screen and Edge Tap for both sides of Mi 4c to respond to light taps, and more.

    As for connectivity, the Xiaomi Mi 4c is a dual-SIM, dual standby device, with 4G LTE support on both the SIM slots.

    Price, availability and competition

    The Xiaomi Mi 4c has been launched in cool white, grey, pink, yellow and blue colors, and is priced for RMB 1299 (US$204) that is approximately Rs. 13,410, for 2GB RAM and 16GB Flash, and RMB 1499 (US$235) which translates to approximately Rs. 15,470, for 3GB RAM and 32GB Flash, in China.

    At this price the phone will be a tough contender to Micromax Canvas Sliver 5, and Samsung's recently launched J5 and J7 in India, and smartphones like OnePlus One, and Asus Zenfone 2 among others.

    The company has not given out any details for its India launch, however considering that India is an important market for the company, we expect the phone to come to India sooner than later.
