Xiaomi Redmi 5 new variant launched with 4GB of RAM

Xiaomi Redmi 5 was launched in China last month along with the Redmi 5 Plus. The successor to the Redmi 4 comes with a fresh look and sports the current trend of full-screen display with the aspect ratio of 18:9. While the smartphone is currently exclusive to the Chinese market, it is soon expected to launch globally. The Redmi 5 was launched in two memory variants; 2GB+16GB and 3GB+32GB.

Well, it seems, Xiaomi has now quietly launched a new variant of the smartphone. First spotted by GizmoChina on the company's official website, the new variant of the Xiaomi Redmi 5 carries 4GB of RAM. Interestingly, this 4GB model also comes with the same 32GB of internal storage space like the 3GB model. The 4GB variant of the smartphone is available in Black, Gold, and Light Blue colors and it is priced at with 1,099 Yuan (approximately Rs. 11,040).

The 3GB RAM model, on the other hand, retails at 899 Yuan (approximately Rs. 8,770) in China. Now, the question is whether or not people will be willing to spend 200 Yuan more just to get an extra 1GB of RAM.

The rest of the specifications remain the same as the other two variants. Just to recall, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 ships with a 5.7-inch HD+ display with the screen resolution of 720×1440 pixels and the aspect ratio of 18:9. Under the hood, the smartphone is fueled by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor running at 1.8GHz and coupled with Adreno 506 GPU.

There are three memory variants of the smartphone. One with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, another one with 3GB RAM and 32GB of storage. And, the new one featuring 4GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage. The storage space can be expanded further up to 128GB using the microSD card slot.

In terms of optics, the Redmi 5 sports a 12-megapixel camera with 1.25-micron pixels for improved photography at the rear. Up front, there is a 5-megapixel camera with Beautify 3.0 and Soft-Toned selfie light.

The smartphone is backed by a 3300mAh battery and the company says it will up to 12 days of standby time. It runs on Android 7.1.2 Nougat operating system, with custom MIUI 9 skin on top.

When it comes to connectivity, the smartphone offers features such as Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, Infrared, USB OTG, FM, 3G, and 4G. Sensors on the phone include Compass Magnetometer, Proximity sensor, Accelerometer, Ambient light sensor and Gyroscope. Dimensions of the handset are 151.8×72.8×7.7mm and it weighs 157 grams.
