Your iPhone Freezing on iOS 27 Is Not One Bug, It Is Three, and Only One Has a Fix Coming

Apple pushed iOS 27 to every supported iPhone on September 14, and this was not a quiet release. It carries the Siri AI overhaul the company has been promising for two years, so adoption has been fast. Within 48 hours, timelines had filled with the same word - Frozen.

Most of the coverage since has collapsed all of it into one headline about unresponsive touchscreens. That framing does readers a disservice. Going through Reddit, X and Apple's own support and developer forums, there are at least three distinct failures here, with different triggers, different severity, and only one of which Apple has publicly acknowledged.

The distinction matters if you are the one holding the phone. A prank soft lock clears in thirty seconds once you know the button combination. A Face ID restart loop is getting patched this week. A touchscreen that dies and stays dead sends you to a service centre in the middle of the festive rush, where you may well be told it is a hardware fault when the evidence suggests otherwise.

The swipe trick doing the rounds as a prank

You open Notification Centre with a swipe from the top left, and before that animation finishes you pull Control Centre down from the top right. Dismiss it and the phone looks dead. Camera and torch icons stay stuck at the top, home screen swipes stop working, taps inside apps stop registering, and even the slide to power off control ignores your finger. I tried this on my iPhone 17 Pro and my phone actually got stuck with some part of notification panel stuck on the top of the screen. Now, I am unable to use swipe gestures on the phone and also unable to turn it off. See the image below.

Benjamin Mayo at 9to5Mac, who documented it first, reproduces it within two or three tries on an iPhone Air running iOS 27.0, and says it survives into the iOS 27.2 beta. AppleInsider stopped Notification Centre from opening but never froze the device, and CNET could not replicate it on an iPhone 14. The window is narrow and force restart fixes it: volume up, volume down, then hold the side button till the Apple logo shows.

The one nobody is triggering on purpose

An X user posted a video on September 20 of an iPhone 18 Pro refusing to register touch at all. Told in the replies that he had exploited the swipe bug, he said he had done nothing of the sort and that it had already happened twice. Macworld found a matching touch sensitivity complaint on Reddit.

The sharpest account sits on Apple's own developer forums. An iPhone 17 Pro owner says the device loses all touchscreen input on iOS 27, a clean restore did not help, and rolling back to iOS 26 restored touch immediately. The pattern held both ways, repeatedly, and Apple's diagnostics found no hardware fault. One user, so weigh it accordingly, but it is far more specific than anything in the mainstream coverage.

Apple has owned up to exactly one of these

The iPhone 18 Pro also has a Face ID problem. On a Reddit thread about panic restarts, 22 of 24 direct replies confirmed the same behaviour, and 9to5Mac has pointed at the smaller Face ID sensor array as the likely culprit. Apple told 9to5Mac a fix was coming early this week, and iOS 27.0.1 has surfaced in MacRumors server logs.

Underneath sits the usual post update noise. Apple itself warns that battery and heat take a hit during background indexing. Two weeks on, though, one MacRumors forum user says indexing has been stuck for five days, with others reporting keyboard hangs and broken iMessage scrolling.

Practically then, a force restart clears the soft lock. Give the phone three days before judging battery or smoothness. And if you are on an iPhone 14 or 15 in India and not itching for the new Siri, sit this out. Plenty of people are unboxing this fortnight, and 27.0.1 is close enough that there is no prize for going first.
