Nokia Targets 100 Million Unit Sales With New Asha Platform
Nokia brings about an inspiring addition to its Asha series of phones by coming up with the new smartphone Asha 501 which runs on its own new Asha software platform.
In an exclusive conversation with GizBot, Viral Oza, MD, Nokia India informed that Nokia expects to sell 100 million units of the new generation Asha smartphones over this fiscal year, beginning with the Nokia Asha 501. Already, the new $ 99 (Rs. 5,424) priced smartphone Asha 501 is expected to be available in approximately 60 operators and distributors in more than 90 countries worldwide when it begins shipping next month.
The new Asha platform is brought in to make the upcoming Asha series run faster and become more responsive. In addition to that, it also allows developers to create, publish and make more money from apps made specifically for the new generation of Asha devices.
Applications such as, ESPN, Facebook, Foursquare, Twitter, CNN, Pictelligent, LinkedIn, Line, Nimbuzz, eBuddy, and games from Electronic Arts and Gameloft are already being developed for the Nokia Asha platform.
The new Nokia Asha platform provides users with two main screens: Home screen and Fastlane screen, which makes it more user friendly now. While traditional Home screen is a, icon-based view for launching individual apps or accessing a specific feature and the Fastlane view gives quick access to recently used contacts, social networks and apps.
The phone will be available in six attractive colors, including Bright Red, Bright Green, Cyan, Yellow, White and Black. It has got a one-piece, polycarbonate back similar to that of Lumia 520.
Specs wise, the Asha 501 comes with a 3-inch capacitive touchscreen, single "back" button, 3.2-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi connectivity and a memory card slot. This device also has swipe UI, The lock screen can also show notifications such as, SMS messages, missed calls, and so on.
One can either swipe away or ignore, or tap to deal with them immediately. There is a 1 GHz processor loaded in the handset for the smooth performance of the device. It also features 64 MB RAM in it. Media features include, music player, video player, FM radio and SNS apps etc. Internet support is offered through different platforms like WiFi, GPRS and EDGE. Sadly, the device currently lacks 3G support and it is said that a dual-SIM version will also be launched soon.
Nevertheless, Nokia may serve the need of India with this budget range smartphone and fulfill its expectation soon.
