Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon 805 Which Supports UHD Video and More

Yesterday, a chip designing company, Qualcomm unveiled their latest Snapdragon 805 processor. The latest processor design comes as a successor to the popular Snapdragon 800 SoC. The company claims that the new chipset is the first processor designed to deliver 4K (UHD) quality video, imaging and graphics to mobile devices.

The new chip features an Adreno 420 GPU, which Qualcomm claims is 40 percent more powerful than its previous one. What makes the Adreno 420 GPU special is that it helps to work out the 4K video rendering. The firm also says that it will produce "more realistic scenes and objects user interface" at lower power.

The company further says, "The Snapdragon 805 processor is the first mobile processor to offer system-level Ultra HD support, 4K video capture and playback and enhanced dual camera Image Signal Processors (ISPs), for superior performance, multitasking, power efficiency and mobile user experiences,"

Moreover, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 features a Krait 450 quad-core CPU. Thus this could be the first mobile CPU where the four cores will be clocked at 2.5GHz. The older Snapdragon 800 was clocked to 2.3GHz. The newly announced MediaTek octa-core chipset is said to only reach 2GHz at the max.

When it comes to the memory bandwidth support, it can stand up to 25.6GBps, Qualcomm said. This will allow the users a super fast multimedia and web browsing experience.

Basically, if one looks into all the data pertaining to the Snapdragon 805 SoC, one can find that this SoC is in fact meant to stream more video content at higher quality using less power especially 4K video quality.


The Snapdragon 805 will be able to provide 40% better graphics than the current Snapdragon 800. Inside, you'll find an LTE modem, but 2-stream dual-band Qualcomm VIVA 802.11ac Wi-Fi, the latter of which also supports 4K video streaming. Of course, you'll need a 4K monitor or TV to go along with that.

However, Qualcomm reportedly said that the Snapdragon 805 processor is in a sampling process a the moment and can be expected to be commercially available by the first half of 2014".
