ivoomi i1 First Impressions

Budget smartphones have started to offer some exciting features that were once only restricted to upper mid-range and flagship smartphones. The most notable features that we have started seeing in affordable handsets are 18:9 aspect ratio displays, fingerprint scanners and dual-lens camera setups. Chinese smartphone maker iVoomi happens to offer all three of them in company's latest smartphone series.

iVoomi i1 First Impressions: Noteworthy features at budget price-point

iVoomi i1 and i1S are company's new handsets for the Indian smartphone market that flight the likes of budget handsets from Xiaomi, Intex, Lenovo, Motorola, etc. The new smartphones are exclusively available on Flipkart at Rs. 5,999 and Rs. 7,499 respectively. iVoomi shipped the base variant of i1 in Black colour to us to find out what the budget smartphone has to offer. We spent some time checking the features of the budget handset and here's what we have to say in our first impressions of iVoomi i1.

Polycarbonate body that feels sturdy and ergonomic

Polycarbonate body that feels sturdy and ergonomic

The new iVoomi handsets come with polycarbonate bodies and feel quite sturdy in hands. The rear panel has been given glossy finish that looks appealing but at the same time it also makes budget handsets prone to smudges and fingerprints. I did not face any issues while operating the handset with one hand as the rounded corners and curves at the rear panel ease up the handling process. However, I must tell you that iVoomi i1 feels slightly bulkier than Infocus Vision 3, which also offers taller 18:9 aspect ratio display at slightly higher price-point. Moreover, Infocus Vision 3 has a 4,000 mAh battery unit whereas iVoomi i1 ships with a smaller 3,000 mAh battery unit.

Ivoomi i1 has a microphone and a speaker unit at the bottom edge. The right side of the handset has volume rockers and power button. The 3.5m headphone jack and the charging port are placed at the top edge. What is rather interesting is that the company has managed to squeeze in a dual-lens camera setup and a fingerprint scanner at such affordable price-point. Overall, iVoomi has done a decent job in designing the new handsets.

It's quite interesting to find out that iVoomi has managed to offer an 18:9 aspect ratio screen at this low price-point. The new iVoomi handsets sport a 5.45-inch HD display that offers a resolution of 1440x720 pixels. The taller screen allows you to consume more content at compact form factor.

The screen on iVoomi I1 delivers vivid colors and has good level of brightness. The viewing angles are not very good as the glass on the display is quite reflective, which makes it tough to check notifications and watch videos in direct sunlight. The screen works brilliantly while using the handset indoors.

Dual-lens camera setup that can deliver Portrait shots

Coming on to another key feature, iVoomi i1 sports a dual-lens camera setup that comprises of a 13MP primary camera and a 2MP secondary camera. The camera can sense depth of field information to create bokeh effects. The image output is not that brilliant but camera did surprise us with some of its abilities.

I managed to get some good portrait shots with the affordable iVoomi i1 in natural light. The images captured by 13MP+2MP rear camera and 8MP front camera lack sharpness but show good color contrast levels. We will evaluate the camera performance in detail in our comprehensive review.

On the hardware front, the smartphones run on the MediaTek 6737 quad-core processor along with Mali-T720 GPU. The iVooMi i1 comes with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, whereas iVoomi i1S offers 3GB RAM and 32GB internal memory. The internal storage can be expanded by up to 128GB via microSD card.

The on-paper specifications and our initial testing revealed that the smartphone performs well in everyday tasks such as web browsing, YouTube, camera usage, calling, etc. You can also play light games without any performance slowdown. We will stress test the handset to find out its true potential.

Battery and Connectivity

Battery and Connectivity

The iVoomi devices are backed up by a 3,000mAh battery unit, which will manage to last a day on light to moderate usage. On the connectivity front, both the devices support 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, dual-SIM.

Conclusion

Conclusion

iVoomi has done a good job and has given some noteworthy features in its latest budget offerings. iVoomi i1 and i1S seems like a good value for money package for masses in the Indian market. The budget iVoomi i1 offers an 18:9 aspect ratio screen, dual-lens camera setup and also features a fingerprint scanner at just Rs. 5,999.

We will evaluate the smartphone's full potential in our comprehensive review. Until then, stay tuned on Gizbot for more videos on smartphone and other technology products.
