Lava Bold N1 5G Review: A Practical Affordable Smartphone

The Lava Bold N1 5G is an affordable smartphone aimed at users who want essential features without spending too much. It features a large 6.67-inch 120Hz display that feels smooth while scrolling through apps and social media, though the HD+ resolution and outdoor brightness could have been better. Performance is surprisingly strong thanks to the Unisoc T765 chip, which handles daily tasks and casual gaming quite comfortably.

Battery life is one of the phone's biggest strengths, easily lasting a full day and sometimes even two with moderate usage. The clean Android experience without ads or bloatware makes the phone feel smoother than many rivals. Camera quality is decent for casual shots in daylight, but low-light performance and charging speeds are average. Overall, the Bold N1 5G focuses on practicality rather than flashy features.

The Bold N1 5G boasts a pretty standard design for an affordable smartphone. It features a glossy plastic back and a matte frame. Our model came in Champane Gold, although you can also get it in Royal Blue. Thankfully, Lava includes a case in the box as the back panel here is a fingerprint and smudge magnet.

The camera array is placed in a squarish island that resembled the camera layout of the iPhone 16 Pro models. The Bold N1 5G has the power and volume buttons placed on the right, an audio jack, USB Type-C port, and speaker grille on the bottom, and the SIM tray on the top left side.

The Bold N1 5G is rather large for a budget phone, weighing just over 200 grams. It can feel slightly cumbersome for users with smaller hands during prolonged one-handed use. The IP54 rating offers basic splash resistance, while the relatively slim bezels help the display look more modern than most phones in this segment. Overall, the design feels practical despite lacking a premium in-hand feel.

YouTube videos looked decent, though the lower resolution means finer details can appear soft at times. Brightness levels are acceptable indoors, but outdoor visibility under harsh sunlight leaves room for improvement. A slightly smaller device would offer better clarity at this resolution.

For performance, the Lava Bold N1 5G opts for a Unisoc T765 SoC paired with 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage. While Snapdragon and MediaTek are more mainstream, it isn't uncommon to see Unisoc chips used in budget phones. And to my surprise the T765 didn't disappoint in real-world testing.

In AnTuTu, the chip managed to surpass 500K, which is faster than both the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 and MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chips. We also saw a single-core score of 690 and a multi-core score of 1733 on Geekbench 6. The Bold N1 5G is able to handle casual gaming, although even titles like Call of Duty: Mobile and BGMI can deliver respectable frame rates on medium settings. Talking about connectivity, the Lava Bold N1 5G supports major Indian 5G networks, including Airtel, Jio, and Vi, provided 5G services are available in your area.

On the back, the Lava Bold N1 5G features a 13MP primary sensor that is accompanied by an LED flash module and an unnamed lens. Up front, there's a 5MP selfie camera.

The Lava Bold N1 snaps photos with vibrant, eye-catching visuals, especially when it comes to reds and greens. While some may prefer such poppy tones, the phone at times goes overboard with the colours. Fortunately, the Bold N1 doesn't overexpose the skies, and the HDR performance is fairly decent. The details in the images are average at best, as you can only expect so much from the sensor size it packs. Taking shots at 2x zoom levels further takes a hit on detail levels.

In low light or at night, the camera viewfinder often makes the image too bright. You'll need to manually reduce the brightness to avoid washed-out colours. Also, since there's no optical image stabilisation (OIS), you'll have to hold the camera steady to avoid motion blur - a task that is harder than it sounds in dim environments.

The front camera delivers acceptable selfies in good lighting and performs adequately for video calls, which is perhaps its most important real-world use case at this price. Video recording tops out at 1080p at 30fps. While the camera system manages decent daylight shots and respectable portrait photos for casual users, overall image quality remains fairly average and is unlikely to be a major selling point of the device.

The Lava Bold N1 ships with Android 15, and Lava promises one year of Android updates. The interface is close to stock Android and feels light, with no ads in the system. There is no preloaded bloatware, no third-party promotion apps, and no spammy notifications from bundled services, which is rare in this entry-level segment.

Lava also includes handy tools such as App Lock and a sidebar for quick shortcuts on the Lava Bold N1. Users can customise the home and lock screens and use intuitive gestures for navigation. Double-tap to wake or turn off the display adds small convenience to daily use. However, the device relies on Android 14 Go, which cuts features from full Android versions.

Because of the Android Go base, several Google apps run lighter variants with fewer functions. Multitasking is more restricted, and background app handling is tighter than on full Android 14 or Android 15 builds. Buyers moving from feature phones may not mind this trimmed experience on the Lava Bold N1. Those used to standard Android may notice the missing flexibility very quickly.

The 5,000mAh battery is one of the strongest aspects of the Lava Bold N1. During testing, the phone needed 9 hours and 21 minutes to drop to 20 percent. Daily use with 4 to 5 hours of screen time often ended with 15 to 20 percent left. Light and moderate users can realistically stretch a single charge across two days.

Gaming performance per charge was also steady on the Lava Bold N1. Across three 30-minute sessions of BGMI, Call of Duty: Mobile and Real Racing 3, the battery dipped only around 7 to 8 percent on average. Where the package falls behind is charging speed. The included 18W charger takes more than two hours to fill the 5,000mAh cell, slower than several 33W rivals.

The Lava Bold N1 5G delivers excellent value for money by focusing on the essentials that matter most to budget buyers. You get reliable 5G connectivity, a smooth 120Hz display, clean Android software without ads, solid battery life, and surprisingly capable performance from the Unisoc T765 chipset. The phone even manages casual gaming comfortably, which is rare in this segment.

Storage and RAM are generous for the price, while the near-stock software experience feels refreshing compared to rivals loaded with bloatware. Although the cameras and charging speeds are average, the overall package feels well-rounded and practical for everyday use at an affordable price.
