Micromax Canvas 5 First Impressions: A specs-heavy budget Flagship smartphone
A few days ahead of Diwali, Micromax today took the wraps off its new flagship smartphone at an event held in Delhi. The smartphone dubbed as Micromax Canvas 5 is the company's latest flag bearer after the Canvas Sliver 5 that was announced a few months back.
The Canvas 5 packs in impressive specifications and is priced compellingly. You get Full-HD display, octa-core chipset with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, 13MP camera, 4G LTE support and more for its price of Rs 11,990. The company is eyeing big on the sales of this phone during the festive season, and feels that there couldn't have been anything better in this phone, considering that they have priced it aggressively.
- 3GB of RAM
- 13MP rear camera
- 4G enabled
- Lacks water resistance capabilities
We were at the launch event of the Micromax Canvas 5 and spent brief time with it. Here are our first impressions of the phone new Flagship offering from Micromax.
Design and Display:
Micromax Canvas 5 is a specs-heavy smartphone looks nice, feels good on hand, and is comfortable to be used single handedly. The display on front runs almost edge to edge, with very thin bezel on the sides, which adds to the looks of the phone. Micromax tried to take some design cues from Apple iPhone 6, which can be noticed on the sides of the Canvas 5 which have slight resemblance to the iPhone 6's sides.
The rear side has a textured panel painted with leather finish, which looks similar to the usual back-panel design on Samsung's low-range smartphones. The back panel can be removed to insert dual SIM cards and a microSD card, and for removing battery of the phone.
Micromax Canvas 5 features a 5.2-inch display, which has become standard screen size for the company, as per CEO Vineet Taneja. The Full HD display offers 1080x1920 pixels resolution giving way to 423ppi. It is immersive and reproduces colours well. It offers nice viewing angles, but is not good to be used under direct sunlight - Well, this would have been an exception anyway!
Overall, we like the phone in terms of its design and display. Despite the plastic chassis, the Canvas 5 is a good looking device, taking into consideration that we don't anyway see anything exceptional in the design department for products in this price range.
Processor:
Micromax Canvas 5 is powered by MediaTek 6753 octa-core chipset ticking at 1.3GHz, with 64-bit architecture, which should run the phone smoothly. There is a lot of room for your data to be stored on the Canvas 5 considering that it has 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage that can be expanded using a microSD card. However, out of 16GB, about 10.5GB RAM is available for consumers, and the rest is occupied by system memory.
Camera:
The Canvas 5 sports a 13MP rear camera with LED flash, and PDFA focus for faster focus in just about 0.2 sec. Micromax has added features like picture in picture which essentially uses pictures clicked by both front and rear camera simultaneously.
Up front, there is a 5MP secondary snapper which is fixed focus but is paired with a flash. The company has added additional features like video pop-out, panorama mode with 4X zoom, night mode, and more for the front camera, which we could not test during the brief session we had with the phone.
There are a lot of other new features and editing tools to support camera. We will give a detailed review soon.
Software:
The Canvas 5 runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop version out of the box and will be upgradable to Android 6.0 Marshmallow via OTA, as per the company.
Conclusion:
Micromax Canvas 5 doesn't have a metal body or a fingerprint scanner, or any other flashy feature to draw your attention, but at the same time, it brings almost everything that a consumer looks for in a smartphone. The Canvas 5 is a 4G enabled smartphone with dual-SIM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and AGPS. It packs in 2,900mAh battery, which as per the company gives up to 10 hours of talk time, and 275 hours of standby time. Also, this is the company's first 3GB RAM Canvas smartphone that is priced so low.
This phone has been priced aggressively. It is Flipkart exclusive and comes bundled with Airtel's double data offer on 4G SIM card.
Micromax Canvas 5 seems to be a good smartphone in this price range, and will be giving tough competition to just arrived Samsung Galaxy On7 which a 5.5-inch device with quad-core chipset, 1.5GB RAM, 13MPcamera, 3000mAh battery and more, and is priced at Rs 10,990.
To know more about the Micromax Canvas 5, stay tuned for our review of the device very soon.
