Motorola Signature Hands-on Review: A Confident Step Into Premium Territory

Motorola is launching its Signature smartphone in India today. The Motorola Signature is set to become the brand's most premium smartphone yet, a step above the company's mid-range Edge series. Given the recent success of the Edge series, it will be interesting to see what Motorola concocts with its Signature handset.

Thankfully, I have been testing out the Motorola Signature for the past week, and it's clear that the brand is aiming to make a serious statement in the ultra-premium segment. While a week isn't enough to pass judgement on the Motorola Signature, it was enough to help me form a strong initial opinion and set clear expectations around what Motorola is trying to achieve with its first truly premium handset.

Familiar Roots, Sharper Execution

Starting off with the design, and it's clear here that Motorola is sticking to its gut. The Signature follows the tried and tested formula of the Edge series, offering a sleek form factor without compromising on build quality. But just how sleek are we talking? Despite its powerful hardware, the Signature measures just 6.99mm thick and weighs merely 186 grams.

Our version of the Signature elevates the look further with an elegant textured back panel. The Martini Olive colourway features a refined, twill-inspired weave that not only adds visual depth but also gives the phone a distinctive, premium character. More importantly, Motorola's comfort-first design shines in daily use, with soft, contoured edges and a well-balanced frame that make the Signature effortless to hold, even during extended reading, camera use, and casual scrolling sessions.

Motorola doesn't skimp on durability either, opting for Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection in the front and an aircraft-grade aluminium frame. To add to its durability, the Signature is military grade MIL-STD-810H certified and holds an IP68+IP69 rating for resistance to dust and water. However, despite the durability claims, I'd have liked to see a case in the box.

Overall, the Motorola Signature feels like a thoughtfully engineered premium phone that balances striking design, reassuring durability, and day-long comfort in a way that I genuinely noticed and appreciated during everyday use.

A Screen That Rarely Misses

Moving on to the display, the Motorola Signature doesn't disappoint. The 6.8-inch Super HD Extreme LTPO AMOLED panel is strikingly sharp and immersive, with punchy colours and deep contrast that made everything from streaming content to everyday scrolling feel premium. Dolby Vision adds a noticeable cinematic flair, while the adaptive 165Hz refresh rate keeps interactions fluid and responsive.

I was particularly impressed by the brightness, which remained perfectly legible outdoors, and the Pantone validation lends a reassuring sense of colour accuracy throughout. While this isn't the best display I've seen at this price, it's consistently impressive in real-world use and more than delivers on the premium experience Motorola is aiming for with the Signature.

On the audio front, the Motorola Signature largely lives up to its premium positioning. The Sound by Bose tuning delivers a rich, well-balanced output, with dual stereo speakers producing clear vocals, satisfying bass, and impressive loudness without distortion. Dolby Atmos adds a subtle sense of depth and space, making movies, games, and even podcasts feel more immersive during everyday use.

Taken together, the vibrant high-refresh display and the well-tuned, immersive audio make the Motorola Signature an excellent all-round entertainment device that genuinely enhanced my movie watching, gaming, and casual media consumption during everyday use.

Built for Real Use, Not Just Benchmarks

For performance, the Signature is equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset paired with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.1 storage, ensuring seamless multitasking irrespective of the task at hand. I was also able to verify Motorola's '3+ million' AnTuTu claims on the first attempt. Additionally, games like Call of Duty: Mobile and Diablo Immortal ran seamlessly with the settings maxed out.

The Signature also delivers excellent sustained performance, with the large 6,002mm² vapour chamber and ArcticMesh Cooling doing a solid job of keeping temperatures in check, even during extended gaming sessions and heavy multitasking, without any noticeable throttling or heating issues. The phone also supports 24 5G bands and Wi-Fi 7 for ultra-low latency gaming.

I am yet to put the Motorola Signature through its paces, although my initial impressions of performance are mostly positive. While the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 isn't the top dog for Android, it does deliver in real-world scenarios.

A Camera System That Finally Feels 'Pro'

The main highlight that sets the Motorola Signature apart from past Motorola smartphones is its camera system. Equipped with a 50MP Sony LYTIA-828 primary sensor (OIS), a 50MP ultrawide lens with macro support, and a 50MP Sony LYTIA-600 periscope-telephoto shooter, the Signature can hold its own against most 'Pro' smartphones.

Up front, the Signature boasts a 50MP Sony LYTIA 500 Front Camera with PDAF. The handset supports 8K video recording at 30fps and 4K Dolby Vision as well as 120fps slow motion video capture. DXOMark rates the Signature as one of the top 10 best camera systems on a smartphone in 2026. Here's my initial thoughts on the camera system.

In my day-to-day use, the Motorola Signature's camera proved to be a dependable and versatile shooter across most situations I threw at it. Indoor scenes and mixed lighting were handled confidently, with balanced exposure and pleasing detail, while the telephoto lens stood out for capturing textures and tight compositions.

I also liked Motorola's slightly warmer colour tuning, which works well for cityscapes and indoor environments. The ultrawide lens maintains excellent consistency with the main camera with minimal distortion. Low-light performance remained reliable with controlled noise, and the front camera delivered natural-looking selfies. The phone also captured 4K video with remarkable colours and excellent stability, across all three lenses.

Gets Through the Day, Charges in a Flash

Wrapping up with the battery, the Motorola Signature has so far proven to be reliably consistent in my everyday use. The 5,200mAh cell comfortably got me through a full day with moderate usage, including media streaming, camera use, navigation, and a fair bit of social scrolling, without triggering battery anxiety by evening.

While the capacity may not sound as impressive on paper when compared to rivals now pushing 7,000mAh batteries, Motorola seems to be prioritising balance over brute numbers here. What truly offsets this is the charging experience. The 90W wired fast charging makes quick top-ups genuinely convenient, while 50W wireless charging and support for both reverse wireless and wired charging add to the Signature's flagship appeal in daily life.

Hello UI Keeps It Refreshingly Simple

To round off the experience, the Motorola Signature runs Android 16 out of the box with Motorola's light-touch Hello UI layered on top. In daily use, the software felt clean, fast, and refreshingly close to stock Android, with Moto AI features and small quality-of-life additions that actually proved useful rather than intrusive. I particularly appreciated the lack of bloat and the consistent smoothness across apps and multitasking.

Motorola's promise of seven major Android updates also adds genuine peace of mind, making the Signature feel like a phone that's built not just for today, but for long-term use well into the next decade.

Despite only spending a short time with the Motorola Signature, it's clear that the brand isn't messing around when it comes to delivering a genuinely premium experience. It brings together refined design, a clean and fluid software experience, a vibrant display, strong performance, and, most importantly, a genuinely impressive camera system that can go toe-to-toe with many established "Pro" smartphones.

If Motorola manages to price the Signature under Rs 65,000 - and especially if it lands closer to the Rs 59,999 mark - it would represent excellent value for money, particularly for users who prioritize photography. Based on these early impressions, the Signature has all the makings of one of Motorola's most compelling smartphones yet, and I'm keen to see how it holds up in a full review.
