Oppo A83 First Impressions

Earlier today, popular handset maker Oppo announced the launch of a new smartphone in India called Oppo A83. Notably, the smartphone was first launched in China last year in December. However, the company has been quick to bring the device to the Indian market. As such Oppo A83 is priced at Rs. 13,990 and the smartphone will go on sale starting January 20. It will be available across e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and Snapdeal as well as via retail stores across the country.

Oppo A83 first impressions: All about the big-display and AI camera

Talking about Oppo A83, the smartphone's key highlights are an edge-to-edge display, a front camera powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance selfies. And it also comes with some other nifty features. While those are the main USP of the smartphone, Oppo A83 is still a midrange device and will go against similar handsets in the category.

Having said that, we got a chance to experience the device hands-on and here is our first impression of the device.

Overall Design and Asthetics

Overall Design and Asthetics

Well, to begin with, Oppo A83 carries a similar design language as Oppo F5 and Oppo F5 Youth with a full-screen edge-to-edge LCD display that measures 5.7-inch and has an HD+ resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels. The screen has thin borders, both at the top and bottom as well as on the sides.

The power and volume buttons which are placed at the right and left the side of the smartphone are well within reach and they do feel tactile. There's a single selfie camera, an earpiece, and sensors at the top of the display whereas at the bottom it has been kept blank. Oppo A83 uses on-screen buttons for navigation.

Coming to the rear side, the device sports a metal-unbody design which is slightly curved along the edges, and it feels quite sturdy. The antenna lines are not visible further giving a clean look to the device. What's interesting about this device is that there is no fingerprint scanner.

The company is providing a face unlock feature and during the launch, Oppo did say that it can be as fast as 0.18 seconds. Well, on trying out the feature, the initial setup was easy and the feature unlocked the phone responsively. It is not as fast as other smartphones with such technology but it is good to see this option on the phone. However, fingerprint scanner would have been an added bonus.

Moving on, Oppo seems to have managed to keep the overall weight down at 143 grams and since it is lightweight it does feel quite good to hold the device in hand. The device also measures 150.5 x 73.1 x 7.7 mm further giving the smartphone a sleek appearance. Meanwhile, Oppo has placed the loudspeaker, Micro-USB port and 3.5mm headphone socket at the bottom, while the secondary microphone is positioned at the top.

As for the color options, Oppo A83 will be available in Champagne Gold and Black color options. As for us, the black looked great. But again choices differ from consumer to consumer. You have two options to go with.

Hardware and Performance

Hardware and Performance

As of now, we can just talk about what the company is offering under the hood and give a brief note on the performance. A detailed review will be posted later. That being said, on using the smartphone initially, Oppo A83 takes a decent time to boot and we didn't notice any lags or stutter while browsing through the phone or while opening and closing the apps. The 2.5GHz octa-core MediaTek 6763T processor paired with 3GB RAM seems to handle the actions quite well.

As for other specifications, the smartphone offers 32GB of internal storage (expandable up to 256 via micro SD card), 3180mAh battery and it runs on Android Nougat 7.1.1 with the company's ColorOS 3.2 on top. If you have used an Oppo phone before then the UI shouldn't be an issue.

Talking about the cameras, the primary camera has a 13-megapixel sensor with a f/2.2 aperture and LED flash. It protrudes a little and there is a metal ring to keep the lens safe from scratches. On taking some quick shots it did produce decent images which were clear and crisp. We tried the same with the front camera which consists of an 8 MP sensor and the result was okay.

However, the camera app also looks organized and you get several modes. The main aspect here is the integration of AI-powered Beauty Technology that enhances selfies. So something to look forward to for selfie lovers. All in all, we liked the results it delivered. As said earlier we will be doing a full review of the device in the days to come so you should watch this space for that.

Connectivity Options and Sensors

Connectivity Options and Sensors

Oppo A83 is a dual-SIM device and has two Nano-SIM slots plus a dedicated microSD card slot as well. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, USB OTG, FM, 3G, and 4G. Sensors on the phone include a Proximity sensor, Accelerometer, and Ambient light sensor.

Verdict

Verdict

After spending some time with the Oppo A83, our initial response is that the phone delivers a decent experience. More significantly, Oppo seems to be again targeting the selfie enthusiasts with this offering.

Nonetheless, given the price and the features that Oppo A83 is offering, the company will surely face some tough and plenty of competition from other brands like Xiaomi and Honor who have also introduced similar feature-packed devices in the market.
