Design and Hinge: Just What We Asked For

Ever since I’ve got my hands on the first Fold from Samsung followed by newer generation, I’ve maintained a common verdict that “you might want to wait for the next one.” The Fold7 finally feels like the next Fold I’ve been waiting for. Reason is the sleek design. The first thing that everyone noticed on this phone is how slim and light Samsung has made it this time. It’s leap ahead of the previous generations and now becomes an easy recommendation for all type of users.

Samsung’s undeniably achieved the mastery of foldable hardware is evident in the Z Fold7. The polished aluminum frame, combined with Gorilla Glass Victus, gives it a sophisticated and sturdy feel. This iteration finally addresses one of the major design annoyances—the gap when folded. Now, the Z Fold7 folds flat seamlessly, providing a more refined look and better protection against dust and pocket debris, a frequent problem in Indian conditions.

The hinge mechanism is notably improved. It feels significantly smoother and sturdier than before. There's a reassuring resistance when opening, requiring two hands, but the action feels deliberate rather than cumbersome. The satisfying 'click’ sound upon closing adds to the overall premium feel. However, at approximately 260 grams, this device remains heavy and somewhat bulky, making it less pocket-friendly than traditional smartphones. But this is an acceptable trade-off for those craving innovation and functionality.

Outer and Inner Displays: Practicality Meets Premiumness

One of my complaints about previous Fold models was the usability of the outer screen. Samsung has finally improved the aspect ratio, making the outer display genuinely practical for daily tasks like texting, navigating apps, and even typing longer emails without constantly needing to unfold the device.

The star attraction, though, remains the expansive 7.6-inch AMOLED inner display. Samsung's display prowess shines here—vibrant colors, sharpness, and a refresh rate of 120Hz for silky-smooth interactions. Watching Netflix, editing photos, or playing high-end games like BGMI feels immersive. Under India's bright sunlight, visibility remained excellent, a testament to Samsung’s display engineering. Yes, the crease is still visible from certain angles, but during real-world usage, it becomes unnoticeable quickly. The under-display camera is vastly improved, now almost invisible, improbing the viewing experience significantly.

In my usage, I ended up using the outer display more often. The larger inner display came in use for certain tasks like watching videos, using maps, playing games and even reading or working on sheets or docs.

Multitasking: Productivity on Steroids

Multitasking is the Z Fold7's true superpower. Powered by the latest Snapdragon chipset and paired with 12GB of RAM, performance during intensive multitasking sessions was consistently impressive. I effortlessly had multiple apps like WhatsApp, Google Docs, Slack, and Chrome running simultaneously without noticeable slowdowns or app refreshes.

Samsung’s One UI further optimizes multitasking with features like the persistent taskbar, reminiscent of a desktop dock, making it incredibly intuitive to switch between tasks. Whether managing editorial workflows or attending multiple video calls, the Z Fold7's multitasking capabilities felt transformative, especially beneficial for busy Indian professionals and creatives.

Battery Life: Impressive Endurance, But Charging Could Be Faster

Despite the unchanged 4,400mAh battery, Samsung’s software and hardware optimizations ensure commendable battery performance. On typical days involving extensive multitasking, social media usage, streaming video, and some gaming, the Fold7 comfortably lasted from morning till night without triggering my anxiety.

However, Samsung's cautious approach to charging speeds remains disappointing. At just 25W, the charging feels frustratingly slow at a ₹1.8 lakh smartphone, especially compared to competitors offering twice the speed at lower price points. Indian users, accustomed to rapid charging from brands like OnePlus, Vivo, and even Oppo, might find this slow pace problematic in fast-paced daily routines.

Cameras: A Flagship-Worthy Experience with a Few Compromises

The camera setup has significantly evolved, bringing it closer to Samsung’s S-series quality. The triple-camera system (50MP main, 12MP ultra-wide, and 10MP telephoto) consistently delivers exceptional photos. Daylight images are sharp, vibrant, and well-detailed, easily rivaling most current flagships. The dynamic range is impressive, capturing details even in challenging backlit scenarios.

Low-light photography has drastically improved as well, with night mode producing minimal noise, accurate colors, and impressive clarity. Even in dimly-lit environments such as indoor parties or street photography at night, the Z Fold7 holds its own confidently.

Portrait photography particularly benefits from the 3x telephoto lens, providing excellent depth of field, sharp edges, and a pleasing background blur, closely emulating professional-level bokeh effects. The camera app also offers extensive manual controls and advanced modes like Director's View, which allows simultaneous video recording from multiple lenses, making it ideal for content creators.

The video capabilities are equally impressive, offering up to 8K video recording at 30fps and super steady stabilization in 4K mode, perfect for capturing cinematic-quality footage on the move.

Despite these strengths, long-range zoom remains behind Samsung’s own Ultra series. Enthusiasts expecting extreme zoom capabilities may feel slightly shortchanged. Additionally, while the outer screen's 10MP selfie camera delivers sharp and vibrant selfies, the inner display's under-display camera still provides passable quality for basic video calls, lacking clarity and detail for high-quality selfies.

AI Integration: Practical and Seamless

Samsung’s implementation of AI features in One UI is genuinely commendable, focusing on practical applications rather than gimmicks to fill the feature sheet (there are some, but very few). Real-time voice translations during international calls, automatic voice note transcriptions in Samsung Notes, and AI-enhanced image editing significantly elevate everyday usability. Individually subtle, these features collectively contribute to an enhanced and streamlined user experience, particularly useful for Indian users juggling multiple languages and diverse tasks.

Software Experience: Polished and Intuitive

One UI continues to mature, with Samsung’s software integration perfectly complementing the foldable form factor. Features like Flex Mode, which adapts app interfaces when partially folded, and better multitasking interfaces showcase thoughtful software engineering.

Regular updates from Samsung is also an important factor that has ensured consistent improvements historically.

Verdict: Is the Z Fold7 Worth Your Money?

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 brings a significant leap in the foldable smartphone category, with much needed improvements in design, practicality, performance, camera quality, and overall usability. However, the slow charging remains a noteworthy drawback for its price.

Ultimately, the Z Fold7 is ideal for tech enthusiasts, productivity-focused professionals, and those who value cutting-edge innovation. In India's fast-changing smartphone market, where premium buyers demand practical usability alongside innovation, the Galaxy Z Fold7 stands out. It's a device that finally bridges the gap between novelty and daily practicality, confidently justifying its premium pricing and truly marking foldables as mainstream-ready. But you shouldn’t completely ignore the Vivo X Fold5, which I am using simultaneously, it’s almost ₹30K cheaper — where it does a few things better than the Fold7.

It’s just the software experience and design preference that will set these options apart.

Budget-conscious buyers or those who don’t require intensive multitasking should also explore more affordable alternatives.
