Tecno Camon I First Impressions

Tecno is working hard to make big in India and is primarily active in the offline market. To sweeten up the deal for offline consumers, Tecno is offering some interesting after sale schemes. The company's products come with 100 days' replacement warranty, 1-time screen replacement and 1-month extended warranty over and above the 12 months' warranty period. Besides, service support plays a big role in making or breaking a deal and Tecno says that the consumers would would enjoy an extensive service network of Carlcare with 900+ multi-brand touch points.

The overall deal seems pretty appealing but how does Camon i performs as a budget smartphone? Let's try to find this out with the following first impressions of the budget handset.

Design: Lightweight and Compact

Design: Lightweight and Compact

Tecno Camon i feels very light in hands and is also compact enough to be used comfortably with one hand. The smartphone is made out kf plastic but does not feel cheap or flimsy. The fingerprint scanner and buttons are placed ergonomically and the rear panel has been given a matte finish. The smartphone will be available in three colour variants - Champagne Gold, Midnight Black and City Blue.

Display: 5.65-inch HD+ Display (18:9 aspect ratio)

Display: 5.65-inch HD+ Display (18:9 aspect ratio)

Keeping up with the market trends, Camon i sports a 5.65-inch HD+ IPS display 18:9 aspect ratio to make video browsing, gaming and multi-tasking more immersive. The display is quite touch responsive and showed good brightness level and contrast ratio indoors. We are yet to test the handset in direct sunlight to give you more insight about the real performance of Full View IPS screen on Camon i.

Camera: 13MP front and rear cameras

Camera: 13MP front and rear cameras

The company says that the standout feature of the TECNO Camon i is its camera prowess. The smartphone sports a 13 MP rear and front camera, which uses f/2.0 aperture and 5P lens. For the selfie lovers, Camon i offers a respectable 80-degree field of view, screen flash and a dedicated LED flash.Interestingly, the 13MP rear camera on Camon i is accompanied with quad-LED flash module, which as per Tecno is optimized with Night Shot Algorithm to brighten up your images in low light.

The picture quality in daylight seemed at par with competition and the LED flashlights (front and rear) will also come handy in taking low-light photographs. How good the cameras perform in low-light will be our major focus in the comprehensive review of tge smartphone.

Hardware and Software

Hardware and Software

Armed with a 3GB RAM and a 32 GB ROM, Camon i seems like a fair deal in budget price-point. The smartphone is powered by a 1.3 GHz Quad Core MediaTek processor. We have tested the MTK6737 CPU in some previous handsets and it serves well for everyday tasks and casual gaming. The smartphone runs on Android 7.0 Nougat which is a slight disappointment as most of the companies have started to offer the latest Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the box even with their budget handsets.

Nevertheless, the UI seemed pretty clean and I did not come across any performance issues on Camon i during my brief testing. However its too early to give a verdict on its true performance and we recommend you to wait for our comprehensive review of the budget smartphone.

Battery and Connectivity

Battery and Connectivity

The battery unit on Camon i is rated at 3,050mAh which as per Tecno can easily last a day even with rigorous usage. One feature that you will find across the company's product lineup is Hybrid SIM card slot with a dedicated space for microSD card. In short, you don't have to compromise on storage and Connectivity with Tecno Camon i.

Conclusion

Conclusion

We have tested a handful of smartphone by Transsion Holdings in last six months that managed to deliver a value for money deal. The new smartphone also seems to offer a good overall package for consumers who are only interested in buying a handset from offline market. We will evaluate the performance of Tecno Camon i in the coming week in our comprehensive review. Stay tuned on Gizbot.com
