At the IFA 2012, Samsung made a slew of announcements including a windows Phone 8 based smartphone - ATIV S. Though the WP8 based devices are not huge as the Android devices, the OS will support high resolution displays and multi-core processors to offer flawless user experience.

 

The ATIV S smartphone will be released into the market soon as the Windows Phone 8 OS becomes official. At the same time, Nokia Lumia series – the Windows Phone based smartphones from the Finnish manufacturer will also see new Windows Phone 8 devices this month.

 

Coming to the existing WP smartphones – Lumia 800 and Lumia 900, which are based on Windows Phone 7.5 Mango OS are the latest additions to the lineup. Among the duo, Lumia 900 is yet to be released in selected markets including India.

With that said, how is the new ATIV S compared to the best Windows Phone smartphones available?

Gizbot has come up with a comparison between Samsung ATIV S, Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 smartphones, to throw some light on how they are different.

Form Factor: ATIV S measures 137.2 x 70.5 x 8.7 mm in dimension and weighs around 135 grams. While Lumia 800 measures 116.5 x 61.2 x 12.1 mm and weighs around 142 grams. In comparison, Lumia 900 is heavier with weight of around 160 grams and a dimension of 127.8 x 68.5 x 11.5 mm.

Display: ATIV S sports a 4.8 inch Super AMOLED HD display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and a pixel density of 306 ppi approximately. The display is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass protection.

On the other hand, Lumia 800 sports a 3.7 inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and a pixel density of 252 ppi approximately. The Nokia ClearBlack display is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass.

In comparison, Lumia 900 has a 4.3 inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and a pixel density of 217 ppi approximately. As in Lumia 800, the Nokia ClearBlack display is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass.

Operating System: ATIV S will run on Windows Phone 8 OS, which is yet to be released while Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 run on Windows Phone 7.5 Mango.

Processor: ATIV S is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 chipset, 1.5GHz dual core Krait processor and Adreno 225 graphics processor.

While, Lumia 800 is equipped with Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon chipset, 1.4 GHz Scorpion processor and Adreno 205 GPU.

On the other hand, Lumia 900 is based on QualcommAPQ8055 Snapdragon chipset, 1.5GHz dual core Krait processor and Adreno 225 graphics processor.

Camera: ATIV S has an 8MP rear camera with autofocus, LED flash and geo-tagging features and a front facing 1.9MP camera for video calling.

On the other hand, Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 have an 8MP rear camera based on Carl Zeiss Optics. The camera has features like autofocus, LED flash and geo-tagging.

However, Lumia 900 has a 1MP front camera for video calling while Lumia 800 lacks one.

Storage: ATIV S has 16GB/32GB internal memory, 1GB RAM and a micro SD card slot for expandable memory. While, Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 have 16GB internal memory and 512MB RAM.

Further, both the handsets lack a micro SD card slot for expandable memory.

Connectivity: On the connectivity front, all the three handsets are packed with features like HSDPA 42 Mbps, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth with A2DP and EDR and micro USB 2.0.

Moreover, ATIV S scores more with the NFC, Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi Channel Bonding features.

Battery: While ATIV S is loaded with a 2,300 mAh Li-ion battery. While, Lumia 800 has a 1,450 mAh Li-ion battery, offering up to 335 hours standby and 9.5 hours talk time.

In comparison, Lumia 900 has a 1,830 mAh Li-ion battery, which offers up to 300 hours standby and 7 hours talk time.

Verdict

If you are not concerned about the hardware specifications, the Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 could good choices, as they are fantastic smartphones, though they come with a single core processor. However, they lack a micro SD card slot for expandable memory support and have shortcomings like lack of NFC and front camera for video calling.

Coming to the ATIV S, it is to noted that it is the only Windows Phone 8 based handset which is known at present, however, the second generation Lumia smartphones from Nokia will soon be unveiled to compete with it.

Only the release of Lumia 900 and ATIV S will throw some light on the detailed user reviews regarding their performance.
