Samsung Galaxy Grand vs Micromax A101: Can the Micromax Offering Challenge Samsung's Reign?
Current generation consumers prefer large sized smartphones categorized as phablets. As these devices have displays larger than 5 inches hence, they are quite convenient to watch videos, perform social media activities, to browser over the net and more.
Samsung, the world's larger smartphone vendor, who has come out with the first phablet in 2011 - Galaxy Note and then its successor - Galaxy Note 2 in 2012. Recently, Samsung came up with a hybrid device - Galaxy Grand (dual SIM variant - Galaxy Grand Duos), which is a 5 inch device based on Android 4.1. Jelly Bean operating system. Samsung has claimed that the device meant for the price conscious consumers and that it will be priced reasonably.
Further, a recent report by IBNLive citing inside sources has claimed that Galaxy Grand will be arriving to India on January 17 and will be priced within Rs 25,000 approximately. The report also claims that the dual SIM variant will be launched in India at first.
Samsung is not the only manufacturer to constantly launch such massive 5 inch devices as several local manufacturers in India have also come up with their offerings that could offer a stiff competition to the global products. One such notable India based vendor, who has launched several phablets is Micromax. Back in August, the company came up with its first 5 inch device - Canvas A100 and within a couple of months it launched A110 Canvas 2 both with the same price tag of Rs 9,999.
Recently, an unannounced phablet - Micromax A101 has been spotted on online retailer site Flipkart bearing a price tag of Rs 10,299. According to the listing, it is quite clear that there is no difference between the specs of A101 and A110 Canvas 2, however, A101 has a slightly higher price tag.
With this information made clear, there are two phablets that are yet to be launched into the Indian market in near future. Gizbot has come up with a spec comparison on the two - Samsung Galaxy Grand and Micromax A101. Read it to know if the Micromax phablet has the ability to challenge with the likes of the Samsung offering.
Dimensions & Weight: Micromax A101 packs a dimension of 148 x 79 x 10.3 mm and weighs in at 200 grams, whereas, Galaxy Grand has a thinner and lighter footprint with a dimension of 143.5 x 76.9 x 9.6 mm and weight of 162 grams.
Display: In this segment, A101 has a 5 inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen display with 800 x 480 pixel resolution and Galaxy Grand packs a 5 inch multi-touch LCD capacitive touchscreen display with the same 800 x 480 pixel resolution.
Processor: On the hardware front, A101 is equipped with a dual core 1GHz Cortex A9 processor and on the other hand, Galaxy Grand comes with a dual core 1.2GHz processor.
OS: On the operating system front, Galaxy Grand scores an upper arm as it rums on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. In comparison, A101 is flavored with Android 4.0 ICS operating system.
When it comes to software features, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has features including Project Butter, expandable and contractible notifications, resizable app widgets, live wallpaper preview, high resolution contact photos, improved Android Beam and many more.
Camera: In terms of camera, both A101 and Galaxy Grand have an 8MP rear camera, however, when it comes to front camera, Galaxy Grand fares well with a 2MP camera as compared to the 0.3MP camera in A101.
Storage: On the memory storage front, A101 has 2GB internal storage, 512MB RAM and a micro SD card slot supporting up to 32GB.
On the other hand, Galaxy Grand has 8GB internal storage, 1GB RAM and a micro SD card slot supporting up to 64GB expandable memory.
Connectivity: Detailing on data connectivity, both the devices are packed with features including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and micro USB.
Battery: In this segment, both the phablets are loaded with a 2,100 mAh Li-ion battery.
Price: Speaking of pricing, Micromax A101 is priced at Rs 10,299 and Samsung Galaxy Grand is estimated to cost within Rs 25,000. However, the devices are still not launched into the market and there is an increased possibility for them to bear different price tags.
Verdict
Analyzing the specifications, Micromax A101 and Samsung Galaxy Grand are quite similar to each other expect for a few differences.
If the concern is on a faster processor, increased internal storage capacity and better front camera for video calling, the Samsung offering should be the right option.
On the other hand, if the concern is on a lower price tag and not on the specifications, the Micromax phablet could be a better choice.
