Samsung Galaxy Note 2 vs Nokia Lumia 920: Shootout of the Biggies for OS Crown

Samsung the world's largest smartphone vendor uncovered the Galaxy Note 2 – the 5.5 phablet based on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS at the IFA expo in Berlin on August 29 and released it in India last week at a price of Rs 39,990.

Going by the lines of the earlier reports, the Note 2 is designed based on the flagship smartphone of Samsung – Galaxy S3 and it has outsmarted the latter when it comes to performance benchmarks.

However, there is another big release by Nokia, which is slated to happen in November after the official debut of the Windows 8 OS – Lumia 920 available in a wide range of vivid color options.

Lumia 920 comes with several breath-taking features and is considered to be an innovative offering by the Finnish handset manufacturer.

Hence, the battle between the giants – Galaxy Note 2 and Lumia 920 begins. Check out the detailed spec comparison of both the smartphones below.

Dimensions & Weight:Galaxy Note 2 carries a dimension of 151.1 x 80.5 x 9.4 mm and weighs around 180 grams while Lumia 920 boasts a dimension of 130.3 x 70.8 x 10.7 mm and a weight of around 185 grams.

Display: Coming to the display, Galaxy Note 2 houses a massive 5.5 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution.

On the other hand, Lumia 920 sports a larger 4.5 inch PureMotion HD+ IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display with 1280 x 768 pixel resolution.

Further, both the devices have the Corning Gorilla Glass 2 protection. Additionally, Galaxy Note 2 has an improved S-Pen support, which is revamped with rubber tip and enhanced touch response.

Processor:In this segment, Galaxy Note 2 is equipped with a Samsung Exynos 4412 Quad chipset and Lumia 920 is equipped with dual core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor.

Operating System: While the Galaxy Note 2 will be running with Google’s latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS, Lumia 920 is based on the upcoming Windows 8 OS.

Coming to the features of these operating systems, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has new features including Project Butter, enhanced accessibility with new APIs, support for International users with bi-directional text support, other language support, expandable and contractible notifications, resizble app widgets, live wallpaper preview, high resolution contact photos, improved Android Beam and Wi-Fi network.

In comparison, Windows Phone 8 has improved features like dynamic Live Tile Information, social network integration in the People hub, Skydrive and Office 365 documents synchronization, Facebook-events integrated calendar, visual voicemail, threaded email conversations support and many more.

Camera:On the camera optics front, Galaxy Note 2 has an 8MP rear camera equipped with features like autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection and image stabilization and a 1.9MP front camera for video calling.

In comparison, Lumia 920 has a better 8.7MP rear camera with with dual LED flash, autofocus and PureView branding and a 1.2MP front camera.

Storage: In this segment, Galaxy Note 2 comes in three versions – 16GB, 32GB and 64GB internal storage, 2GB RAM and a micro SD card slot supporting up to 32GB expandable memory.

On the other hand, Lumia 920 Lumia 920 has 32GB internal memory and 1GB RAM. However, it lacks a micro SD card slot for expandable memory support.

Connectivity:On the connectivity front, both are packed with similar features such as 3G, NFC, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP and EDR and micro USB 2.0.

Further, Nokia Lumia 920 supports Qi Wireless Charging feature.

Battery:Galaxy Note 2 is loaded with a larger 3,100 mAh Li-ion battery of undisclosed battery life and Lumia 920 is equipped with a 2,000 mAh BP-4GW battery, which offers 400 hours standby and 10 hours talk time.

Verdict

Being high-end devices – Galaxy Note 2 and Lumia 920 are packed with some impressive software features and advanced specifications. Moreover, being based on different operating systems, both the devices have unique software features that are based on their own platforms.

When it comes to Galaxy Note 2, as it is based on the design of S3, it has some exclusive S software features including S Voice, Direct Call, Smart Stay, S Beam, Pop-Up Play and many more.

At the same time, Lumia 920 being an innovative smartphone has groundbreaking features such as wireless charging, glove-friendly touchscreen display and more.

If you are too concerned about the size of the device, the Lumia 920 with a better main camera, wireless charging and a variety of color options could be the right one.

However, if you like to have a device with a large display, increased memory options, Android user experience and stylus support, then the 5.5 inch Galaxy Note 2 should be a better choice.
