Samsung the South Korean tech giant is pushing in a lot of devices based on Android and Windows platforms to secure the throne of the global smartphone market.

 

At the Unpacked event during the IFA 2012 in Berlin on August 29, the world's largest smartphone manufacturer unveiled its much anticipated next generation phablet – Galaxy Note 2 alongside a series of gadgets – a variety of new ATIV tablets based on Windows 8, ATIV S Windows Phone 8 and Galaxy Camera.

 

Note 2 is designed closely on the lines of S3 – the company's flagship smartphone, which was unveiled at the special Unpacked event on May 3, 2012 in London. The S3 not only made all the heads turn towards it but also scored soaring performance in sales – reaching 10 million units in only two months of its release.

As the much hyped phablet carries the design, software features and some specs that are available in S3, how are the two offerings from the Galaxy series manufacturer different from each other?

Have a look at the spec comparison between Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3 – the two flagship devices from Samsung.

Display & Dimension: The Note 2 carries a dimension of 151.1 x 80.5 x 9.4 mm and weighs around 180 grams while the S3 carries a dimension of 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm and is light weight at 133 grams.

Coming to the display being a phablet, Note 2 houses a massive 5.5 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and 267 ppi pixel density approximately.

On the other hand, Galaxy S3 houses a 4.8 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and 306 ppi pixel density approximately.

Further, both the devices have the Corning Gorilla Glass 2 protection. Additionally, Galaxy Note 2 has an improved S-Pen support, which features a revamped look with rubber tip and an enhanced touch response.

Processor: Both the devices are equipped with a quad core Cortex A9 processor, Samsung Exynos 4412 Quad chipset and Mali 400MP GPU. The difference lies in the processor clock speed – 1.6GHz in Note 2 and 1.4 GHz in

S3.

Operating System: While the Galaxy Note 2 will be running with Google's latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS, S3 runs on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. However, it is to be noted that the Samsung has confirmed the Jelly Bean roll out for Galaxy S3.

Software Features: Both Note 2 and S3 have exclusive software features like S Voice – voice assistant to rival Apple's Siri, Direct Call – allowing users to instantly call a contact on screen simply by taking the device near to the ear and Smart Stay – an eye tracking software. There are several others like S Beam, Pop-Up Play and more on these flaghsip models.

Camera: On the camera optics front, both the gadgets fare equally with an 8MP rear camera equipped with features like autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection and image stabilization.

Moreover, both have a 1.9MP front facing camera for video calling.

Storage: While both Note 2 and S3 come in three variants – 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, the former has a 2GB RAM and the latter comes only with 1GB RAM.

Further, Note 2 has a micro SD card slot supporting up to 32GB expandable memory while S3 has a micro SD card slot supporting up to 64GB expandable memory.

Connectivity: On the connectivity front, both are packed with similar features such as HSDPA 21 Mbps, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps, LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP and EDR, NFC, micro USB 2.0 and USB on the go.

Battery: Note 2 is loaded with a larger 3,100 mAh Li-ion battery, the battery life in hours is not revealed by Samsung, S3 is loaded with a 2,100 mAh Li-ion battery, which offers 11.5 hours talk time and 790 hours stand by.

Price: Samsung has not confirmed the price of the Galaxy Note successor while that of 16GB S3 is Rs 37,990 and 32GB S3 is Rs 40,900 approximately.

Verdict

Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3 – the two flagship devices from the world's largest smartphone manufacturer have similar specifications and design. However, the phablet comes with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which has many improved features like Project Butter.

The main difference between the two will be in the screen size, in which the Galaxy Note successor takes all the laurels with its large 5.5 inch display.

If you are too concerned about the size and usability of the gadget, then the S3 will be a perfect one as it is light in weight and smaller in size when compared to the Note 2.
