Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini vs Galaxy S3: Which is a Smarter Purchase?
It was just a couple of months back, when everyone was drooling to buy the new Samsung Galaxy S3 smarthphone and the choice was made by the consumers only on one factor, that is, how much storage would you pay for 16GB, 32GB or 64GB.
On Thursday, Samsung lifted the curtains off the Galaxy S3 Mini – the miniature version of its flagship smartphone – Galaxy S3. With the introduction of the new mini version of S3, deciding which handset to buy has gotten a whole lot more complicated. Instead of just having to choose between storage capacities, there are now two different S3 models to choose from.
Well, being a part of the same flagship family, both the models are almost similar in look and feel, however familiarity doesn't necessarily make choosing between the two S3 handsets easier. Hence, if you are faced with the choice of which S3 phone to buy, here is a clear spec comparison that may make that decision a little easier for you.
Dimensions & Weight: Being a smaller version of the original S3, Galaxy S3 Mini carries a smaller footprint of 121.55 x 63 x 9.85 mm and weighs around 111.5 grams as compared to the original Galaxy S3 with boasts a dimension of 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm and weight of around 133 grams.
Display: Speaking of the display, Galaxy S3 Mini sports a 4 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with a lower 800 x 400 pixel resolution.
In comparison, Galaxy S3 houses a super 4.8 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution.
Processor: In this segment, Galaxy S3 Mini is equipped with a 1GHz dual-core processor and Galaxy S3 has a more powerful quad core Samsung Exynos 4412 Quad chipset.
Operating System: Coming to the operating system, S3 Mini runs on Google's latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS out of the box while Galaxy S3 runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and however it is confirmed to receive Jelly Bean update, once it rolls out globally.
Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has new features including Project Butter, expandable and contractible notifications, resizable app widgets, live wallpaper preview, high resolution contact photos, improved Android Beam and many more.
Camera: On the camera optics front, Galaxy S3 Mini has been enthrusted with a lower 5MP rear camera and a VGA camera at the front for video calling. On the other hand, Galaxy S3 has a better 8MP rear camera and a 1.9MP front camera for video calling purposes.
Storage: In terms of storage, Galaxy S3 Mini has 8GB/16GB internal storage, 1GB RAM and a micro SD card slot supporting up to 32GB.
As it is already know, globally Galaxy S3 comes in three variants including 16GB/32GB/64GB internal memory, 1GB RAM and a micro SD card slot supporting expandable memory up to 64GB.
Connectivity: On the connectivity front, both are packed with same features including Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP and EDR, NFC and micro USB 2.0.
Battery: Galaxy S3 Mini has been powered by Samsung with a 1,500 mAh Li-ion battery of undisclosed battery life, however original S3 has more powerful battery backup with 2,100 mAh Li-ion battery, which offers 11.5 hours talk time and 790 hours stand by.
Price: Samsung is tight lipped about the price of the new S3 Mini smartphone, however, analysts believe that it will retail within the price range of Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 approximately. On the other hand, 16GB S3 will cost you Rs 37,990 and 32GB S3 is priced at Rs 40,900 approximately in India.
The verdict is very simple over here, if you can afford the original S3, go for it. It will last the longer, it will offer the best performance and features and will hold its value longest if you want to resell it.
However, if you are a more price conscious consumer, then the newly launched S3 Mini will be a smarter choice for you. Because, the general rule when making a technology purchase is to buy a device that you can afford and maintain as well.
Meanwhile, the two handsets are packed with the same exclusive software features introduced by Samsung recently including S Beam, S Voice, Direct Call, Smart Stay and more to offer great user experience to the consumers.
Let us know in the comments below, which one did you decide upon – the original S3 or the new Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini?
