Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini with Android Jelly Bean Launched: Will it Beat the Sales of Apple iPhone 5?

Dimensions & Weight: When compared, Galaxy S3 Mini carries a smaller dimension of 121.55 x 63 x 9.85 mm and weighs around 111.5 grams, while iPhone 5 boasts a dimension of 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm and weighs at 112 grams, which is not much of a difference.

Display: Coming to the display, both the new smartphones carry the same 4-inch display. But Galaxy S3 Mini houses Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with 800 x 400 pixel resolution and 233 ppi pixel density.

On the other hand, iPhone 5 packs LED-backlit IPS capacitive touchscreen Retina display with 1136 x 640 pixel resolution and 326 ppi pixel density.

Processor: In this segment, Galaxy S3 Mini is equipped with a 1GHz dual-core processor and iPhone 5 is equipped with the new Apple A6 chipset. Well, over here, spec wise Apple's processor is the latest one but the dual-core processor of the Samsung phone at a mid-range is also strong enough to run everything smoothly.

Operating System: As informed earleir, Galaxy S3 Mini has been launched by Samsung enthrusted with Google’s latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS, whereas, iPhone 5 also runs on the new iOS 6 platform.

Coming to the features of these operating systems, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has new features including Project Butter, enhanced accessibility with new APIs, support for International users with bi-directional text support, other language support, expandable and contractible notifications, resizble app widgets, live wallpaper preview, high resolution contact photos, improved Android Beam and Wi-Fi network.

In comparison, iOS 6 is loaded with 200 new features including Apple Maps, improved Siri, new Safari browser, iCloud cloud storage, deeper integration to Facebook, new PassBook app, PhotoStream app and more.

Camera: On the camera optics front, Galaxy S3 Mini has a 5MP rear camera and a VGA camera at the front for video calling.

In comparison, iPhone 5 has a better 8MP rear camera with the likes of iSight technology and a 1.3MP front camera for video calling purposes.

Storage: While Galaxy S3 Mini comes in two variants – 8GB/16GB, iPhone 5 comes in three variants including 16GB/32GB/64GB. However, both the smartphones have same 1GB RAM.

S3 Mini scores in this as it has a micro SD card slot supporting up to 32GB expandable memory, which the iPhone 5 lacks.

Connectivity: On the connectivity front, both are packed with similar features such as HSDPA 21 Mbps, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP and EDR and micro USB 2.0.

Standing strong, Galaxy S3 Mini also has the NFC connectivity feature although iPhone 5 again lack the same but has a 4G LTE support.

Battery: Galaxy S3 Mini is loaded with a 1,500 mAh Li-ion battery of undisclosed battery life and iPhone 5 is claimed to have a Li-ion battery delivering 225 hours standby and 8 hours talk time.

Verdict

Galaxy S3 Mini and iPhone 5 seem highly competitive to each other, with one or the other going back and forth in the smartphone specifications race.

Moreover, both the smartphones have unique software features that are restricted to their own operating systems.

Galaxy S3 Mini, being the miniature version of S3 has been integrated with all the exclusive S features including S Voice, Smart Stay, Direct Call, Smart Stay, Buddy Photo Share and S Beam.

Also, Apple has incorporated an improved version of the voice assistant Siri in the iPhone 5 and several other features with the new iOS 6 platform as mentioned in the OS section.

With Android 4.1 Jelly Bean smartphone, NFC connectivity and other trendy features, S3 Mini has definitely proven itself as a stiff competitor to the latest Apple iPhone 5. However no comments can be given on the handsets obstruction to the sales figures to iPhone, till Samsung doesn’t gives a final statement on the pricing of the new mini handset.
