2014 has been quite the exciting year in terms of smartphone sales and production. And yet there's still a big chunk of the year waiting to unfold.
However, if we are to go by the kind of craze we have already seen from the smartphone market in India in the wake of the current year, it can be easily determined that the current year will also close with a bang with more new handsets in the open.
But whatever we have seen from the year until now, we have already been treated to some huge releases over the past few months. Some of them from big names and some of them from the ones who are just starting out in the country.
Sticking to the earlier part of the year, on the summer of 2014 to be precise, the native smartphone business has been bustling and kept busy with a huge number of handsets arriving from everywhere.
But while the summer has seen a host of new devices, which are the ones that have stood aside others in terms of greatness and overall user experience? We take a look at the top 5.
One of the top choices around, the Nexus 5 is available in two different 16 GB and 32 GB variants. The device sports a 4.95-inch FHD display with pixel density of 445ppi along with a protection of Corning Gorilla Glass 3.
Powering the handset is Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 quad core processor clocked to 2.3 GHz, Adreno 330 GPU tuned to 450MHz and a 2GB RAM. Most interesting part of the device is that it runs on the latest iteration Android 4.4 KitKat.
The Nexus 5 also offers an 8 megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization - a feature that's hardly found in 8MP camera. The phone is also loaded with 1.3 megapixel front facing shooter.
Easily one of the top notch devices of the year, The HTC One M8 comes packed with a 5-inch Full HD display, Android 4.4.2 KitKat with the new HTC Sense 6.0 UI, Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB RAM, 16/32GB internal memory, MicroSD slot, dual LED rear camera with dual flash, 5 MP front facing shooter and a non-removable 2,600 mAh battery.
Everybody knows the Motorola Moto G and the kind of market it has created for itself in India. This fantastic device incorporates a 4.5-inch LCD display having a resolution of 1280 x 720 HD display at 329 pixels.
It has a 1.2GHz quad-core processor powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC, backed by 1GB of RAM and 8G/16GB of internal storage. On the imaging front, the Moto G features a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with HDR and panoramic support, and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera.
The makers have added a 2,070mAh battery fitted inside. The Android 4.4 KitKat powered phone also supports dual-SIM connectivity.
Sony is a household name in the Indian smartphone business and indeed one of the biggest players around. And the company's Xperia Z2 handset is quite the catch. The handset features a 5.2-inch Full HD IPS display. It is powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 chipset, coupled with 3GB RAM and runs on Android 4.4 KitKat with Sony's home baked proprietary skin on top.
The device offers 16GB of ROM, which can be expandable up to 128GB via a microSD card slot. The makers have added a 3200mAh battery fitted inside. On the imaging front, there's a 20.7MP camera with Exmor R for Mobile sensor.
The phone's camera is also capable of shooting videos in 4K resolution. Like other Sony Xperia devices, the Xperia Z2 is water-resistant and dustproof in nature. Other highlighted features of the smartphone include 2G, 3G and Wi-Fi, NFC, GPS, amongst others.
Xiaomi may be a recent name in the industry, but it has already proven to be one of the highlight names in the market. Its latest offering, the Mi 3, sports a 5-inch IPS display offering a full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) and 441ppi pixel density with Corning Gorilla glass protection.
It is powered by a 2.3 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 (MSM 8974AB) processor coupled with 2GB DDR3 RAM and it runs a custom interface dubbed MiUI that is a very different take on Android.
The smartphone also features a high-end camera modules. You will find a 13MP rear camera with LED Flash, Sony Exmor BSI sensor, f/2.2 aperture, 1080p full HD video recording along with a 2MP front-facing camera with similar specs as the rear camera.
The latest Xiaomi smartphone which measures 114mm×72mm×8.1mm and weighs 145g, houses a 16 GB internal memory. Connectivity options include 3G, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n (2.4/5 GHz), WiFi Direct, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, and NFC and will draw its energy from a 3050mAh battery.
