Yamaha Restio ISX-800 desktop music system

Yamaha has introduced the Restio ISX-800 music system. This appears to be a lifestyle product and is really compact in size. The music system comprises of a CD player, dock to connect your iPod or iPhone, speakers, amplifier, AM/FM tuner, USB port and alarm clock.

All these are clustered into one neat box that can be mounted on the wall or placed on a stylish stand that comes along with it.

The overall design theme of Restio ISX-800 is square. Users are offered a choice of colours for the speaker’s grille cloth. Green, purple, black and white are the colours available. You don’t need to come close to the speaker every time to read what’s on the alphanumeric display. It can be read from a distance too, even if you’re across the room.

The system is also reasonably slim with a thickness of 9 cm. Yamaha also provides a remote control with the same buttons you’ll find on the top of the device – volume, mute, track selection, source selection, radio station and snooze.

Sound from Yamaha Restio ISX-800 is good enough to fill the room. It can really play loud in spite of being such a slim and compact device that only has two woofers of four inches each. As mentioned before, you can connect your iPhone or iPod too.

It connects to the iPod digitally through digital-to-analog chips. With the remote control you can jump track, play and pause when connected to the iPod. You can also connect USB music sticks or data travelers to the Restio through the USB port.

However, it is strange that album, track or artist information isn’t displayed on the LED display but only track numbers and folder if you’re playing from another source.

Another disadvantage is that Restio ISX-800 does not provide any networking options such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Ethernet or AirPlay. Some of these could have been incorporated to make this great product even better.

The alarm clock mechanism is a unique one in the Yamaha Restio ISX-800. Called IntelliAlarm, it initially plays the selected music source by filtering the high frequencies and then slowly cranks it up, reaching the complete audio spectrum.

Overall, Restio ISX-800 provides a well-balanced sound and is loud enough to fill the room and satisfy users. It looks great too. But a major disadvantage of a product with such a price tag is the lack of networking options. Yamaha has priced the Masaharu Ono-designed Restio ISX-800 at more than Rs. 40,000 in India.
