Apple iPhone XS: Review

  • Smart HDR helps the camera
  • More powerful again
  • Fast operation in the hand
  • Battery life is not world-beating
  • Design not altered in a year
  • Still very expensive

The iPhone XS is launched in India. The phone sports a 5.8-inch OLED screen, with a screen resolution of 1125 x 2436 pixels. Under the hood, the handset is powered by an A12 Bionic CPU which is the first commercially available 7nm chip. The processor, which comprises of a four-core CPU, six-core GPU a next-gen eight-core neural engine, promises to deliver a 15 percent performance boost compared to last year's A11 chip, 40 percent lower power consumption and support for real-time machine learning. It comes with 4GB RAM and 64GB/256GB/512GB internal storage options. On the photography front, the mobile packs a dual 12MP camera setup which boasts a larger sensor than that found on the iPhone X and an improved TrueTone flash. There's a bunch of new Camera software features incoming too, including a new 'Smart HDR' mode and the ability to adjust a photo's depth of field after it's been taken. Up front, it uses the same 7MP TrueDepth camera which is twice as fast as before. The TrueDepth camera also supports FaceID.

The XS comes with all necessary connectivity options required in a premium smartphone. It packs a non-removable Li-ion powerful battery of 2658 mAh capacity. Sensors include a Light sensor, Proximity sensor, Accelerometer, Barometer, Compass, and Gyroscope. It runs iOS 12 out of the box. The handset is available in Space Gray, Silver, and Gold color options. The iPhone XS price starts at Rs. 99,900 for 4GB/64GB, Rs. 1,14,000 for 4GB/256GB, and Rs. 1,34,900 for 4GB/512GB variants in the Indian market.

How do we rate a Device?

Rating a smartphone is a tedious process and a lot of parameters have to be considered before judging the overall performance of the device such as display, camera, processor, RAM, storage, battery, and the pricing.

So, here are how these specs will affect the real-life usage of a device and why how we meticulously consider each of these points to rate a smartphone.

Cameras have evolved a lot over the last few years and multi-camera setup is a new norm. We consider various parameters like MP count, aperture size, pixel size, image stabilization to rate a camera system of a smartphone out of 5. Any device that scores more than 3.5 can take good photos and videos and if a phone scores over 4, then it will be one of the best camera smartphones in the market.

Though battery seems like an underrated feature and we look at the battery capacity, fast charging supporting technology, and even the wireless charging capability is also taken into consideration to rate smartphone's battery capability.

The display is the face of a smartphone. And there are a lot of parameters like the panel technology (IPS LCD, OLED, TFT) and other parameters also taken into consideration like the resolution, pixel density, and refresh rate.

Value for Money

A smartphone could have great specs, but if it is not priced well then you might not get the best value-for-money. So, we compare a smartphone with the contemporaries to rate the value-for-money of a device out of 5.

This aspect is decided on various sub specifics, such as availability of microSD card slot, the amount of RAM the device offers, processor capability, and the network support. This parameter has more weightage when compared to other departments.
