The Vivo Y12s is the latest addition to the Chinese manufacturer’s budget ‘Y’ smartphone lineup in India. It is primarily a trimmed-down version of the Vivo Y12 which was announced back in 2019 in the country. The handset brings along a basic set of designs which we have seen on multiple affordable smartphones by now. The handset dons a shimmering rear panel with a vertically aligned dual-camera module with an LED flash. The smartphone bestows a 6.51-inch display with a waterdrop notch. It is an IPS LCD panel that comes with a standard HD+ resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels. The display further features an aspect ratio of 20:9, has 81.6 percent screen-to-body ratio, and a pixel density of 270 PPI. The big panel will let you enjoy 720p videos online.

Vivo Y12s: Hardware Performance

The Vivo Y12s has the Helio G35 processor handling all the tasks at hand. This is an entry-level octa-core processor by MediaTek which has octa-cores and is combined with PowerVR GE8320 GPU to render the graphics. The unit will ship in alone 3GB RAM and 32GB storage option. You will be able to use an external microSD card. Notably, the device has a dedicated SIM slot that will let you use two SIM and one microSD card simultaneously. The handset will be capable of performing general tasks with ease. You will experience no lags in calling and web surfing, etc. High-end gaming is something this device might have some hiccups with.

Vivo Y12s: Price To Specs Ratio

Vivo has priced the Y12s at Rs. 9,999. As mentioned earlier, this unit is announced in a single 3GB RAM and 32GB storage option. We are not sure if the company will introduce any other variant in the coming days or not. The device can be purchased across both online and offline retail stores in the country. The pricing is competitive considering the features it offers in the Rs. 10,000 price mark. If we speak of the color options, the device can be bought in Phantom Black and Glacier Blue shades.

Vivo Y12s: Camera Performance

The Vivo Y12s has a dual-camera module inside a vertical array at the rear. The unit features a 13MP main lens which has an f/2.2 aperture and supports PDAF (Phase Detection Autofocus). There is also a 2MP sensor with an f/2.4 aperture which is used to create bokeh effects. The rear cameras are capable of shooting 1080@30fps. We have seen Vivo smartphones with a similar imaging setup in the past and the performance is decent in broad daylight. The handset packs an 8MP camera inside the waterdrop notch that clicks the selfies. The same lens doubles up for video calling as well. It has an f/2.4 aperture and can also record 1080p@30fps videos.

Vivo Y12s: Important/ Highlight Features

The Vivo Y12s is driven by a 5,000 mAh battery unit. Unfortunately, there is no fast charging support, rather the device ships will ship with standard 10W charging. The setup is suitable to run the device or an entire day on a single charge. The device features a physical fingerprint scanner for biometric authentication which is mounted at the side panel. The unit will boot on Android 10 OS and have a custom FuntTouch OS 11.

Vivo Y12s: Verdict

The Vivo Y12s is just a new face in the crowded budget smartphone segment in India. The device is packed with necessary features that make it a decent daily driver. The handset has got multiple rivals in its segment. Specifically, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Realme’s offering which are under Rs. 10,000 price mark. The Poco C3 is another device that rivals up well against the Vivo Y12s.

How do we rate a Device?

Rating a smartphone is a tedious process and a lot of parameters have to be considered before judging the overall performance of the device such as display, camera, processor, RAM, storage, battery, and the pricing.

So, here are how these specs will affect the real-life usage of a device and why how we meticulously consider each of these points to rate a smartphone.

Cameras have evolved a lot over the last few years and multi-camera setup is a new norm. We consider various parameters like MP count, aperture size, pixel size, image stabilization to rate a camera system of a smartphone out of 5. Any device that scores more than 3.5 can take good photos and videos and if a phone scores over 4, then it will be one of the best camera smartphones in the market.

Though battery seems like an underrated feature and we look at the battery capacity, fast charging supporting technology, and even the wireless charging capability is also taken into consideration to rate smartphone's battery capability.

The display is the face of a smartphone. And there are a lot of parameters like the panel technology (IPS LCD, OLED, TFT) and other parameters also taken into consideration like the resolution, pixel density, and refresh rate.

Value for Money

A smartphone could have great specs, but if it is not priced well then you might not get the best value-for-money. So, we compare a smartphone with the contemporaries to rate the value-for-money of a device out of 5.

This aspect is decided on various sub specifics, such as availability of microSD card slot, the amount of RAM the device offers, processor capability, and the network support. This parameter has more weightage when compared to other departments.
