Aadhaar card is no longer mandatory for getting a mobile SIM. The government of India has confirmed that it is not necessary to have an Aadhar card to buy a SIM card. With this confirmation, Indian citizens are not allowed to give any other form of verification Ids like driving license, passport, and voter ID card. All the network operators have been asked to follow the directive immediately.

Aadhaar card not mandatory to get mobile SIMs, says Government

"The ministry has issued instructions to all telecom companies, asking them not to deny a SIM card to any individual who does not have an Aadhaar number. We have asked them to accept other forms of KYC (know your customer) documents, and continue to issue SIM cards," Sundararajan told TOI.

On the basis of earlier instruction, telecom companies were hounding customers on Aashaar verification. This new step will give relief to citizens who don't hold an Aadhaar card. This is also a relief for NRIs and foreigners who visit our country.

Majority of NRIs and foreigners obviously don't have Aadhaar card and retailers of mobile companies had to keep on denying them for a SIM card. Thankfully government has taken this issue very seriously.

"This kind of a denial by retailers is completely uncalled for when there is no legal basis to enforce it. Such practices will not be tolerated," TOI quoted a senior official.

This move should also put an end to the telecom operators bombarding users with calls, messages to link Aadhaar card for verification purposes. Network companies have attacked customers with all possible ways, by calling, messaging asking them to link their phone numbers with Aadhaar. This was frustrating for many subscribers, to attend unnecessary calls and messages all time.

Follow the below steps to link your Aadhaar with a mobile number.

Step 1: Dial the number 14546 from your mobile number, and wait for the IVR.

Step 2: Once the call is connected, follow the voice instruction and act accordingly. In this case, you need to press 1 if you are an Indian and 2 for a foreign national.

Step 3: Now enter your 12 digits unique Aadhar number, where the IVR once again repeats it what you've entered. Step 4: Press 1 to confirm or Press 2 too if you have made mistake.

Step 5: Now, a 6-digit OTP will be sent on your smartphone. Upon which, you will hear a voice message asking for your permission to share your name, address, photo and date of birth details from Aadhaar with your telecom operator.

Step 6: In order to link, enter the OTP number that you received through text message. Step 7: It will be verified within 48 hours and the number will be linked to your phone number.
