After Airtel, Jio Partners with SpaceX to Bring Starlink Internet to India
Following Airtel’s recent partnership with SpaceX, Jio has now joined hands with Elon Musk’s company to explore bringing Starlink’s satellite internet to India. The goal is to provide high-speed broadband to rural and remote areas, but everything depends on SpaceX getting the necessary regulatory approvals.

Bringing Satellite Internet to More People
Jio and SpaceX plan to combine their strengths—Jio’s extensive telecom network and Starlink’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites—to improve internet access across India. While JioFiber and JioAirFiber already serve urban and semi-urban areas, Starlink could be a game-changer for regions where traditional broadband is either slow or nonexistent.
Once approvals are in place, Jio will sell Starlink hardware through its retail stores and online platforms. It will also provide customer support for installation and activation, making the service easier to access for individuals and businesses alike.
Regulatory Hurdles and What Comes Next
Right now, the biggest challenge is getting the green light from regulators. SpaceX has been trying to secure permission to operate Starlink in India, and Jio’s involvement could help move things along. If approved, this could shake up the broadband market, especially with Airtel already working with SpaceX through its OneWeb venture.
Jio’s CEO, Mathew Oommen, said the partnership is about making fast and affordable internet available to all Indians, no matter where they live. SpaceX’s Gwynne Shotwell echoed this, saying they’re eager to work with Jio and secure the necessary approvals.
