Google Health has recently teamed up with Apollo Radiology International, marking a significant step forward in the field of medical technology in India. This initiative was announced during Google's annual The Check Up event and highlights the tech giant's commitment to improving healthcare outcomes through innovative technology.

AI to Revolutionise Disease Screening in India

According to Shravya Shetty, Principal Engineer, Health AI at Google Health, radiology is a critical area in healthcare where the lack of sufficient expertise can impact patient outcomes. The scarcity of radiologists in India often leads to delayed diagnoses and treatment. Google's AI technology aims to bridge this gap by enhancing the screening process for major diseases. Apollo Radiology International, in collaboration with Google, plans to offer three million free screenings over the next decade, a move that could significantly improve early detection rates and health outcomes across the country.

The decision to focus on tuberculosis, lung cancer, and breast cancer stems from the alarming mortality rates associated with these diseases. Tuberculosis alone claims more than 1.3 million lives globally, while lung cancer and breast cancer also pose significant health threats in India. Early detection is crucial for improving survival chances, yet the lack of trained professionals often hinders this process.

AI's Role in Overcoming Challenges

One of the major challenges in improving early disease detection in India is the shortage of trained radiologists capable of interpreting screening images quickly. This shortage can lead to significant delays in diagnosis, sometimes even missing the disease entirely during routine checkups.
