Android O officially confirmed to launch on August 21
As far as the new features are concerned, the Android O is expected to bring notification channels, shortcut pinning, auto-fill, picture-in-picture, etc.
Last week, Android Police's managing editor David Ruddock said that Android O would be unveiled on August 21. However, he had no solid evidence to back up his claims.
Now, Google has announced the date and time when the Android O will be launched. Guess what? The date is August 21. So Ruddock was right with his speculation. Google will release the Android O through a live-stream from New York City that begins at 2:40 PM EST. It is worth pointing out that the timing will coincide with the solar eclipse expected to make its way across the US.
The search giant has even set up a website to promote the launch event that contains a countdown timer. It even shows which areas in the US will witness the solar eclipse as well as some eclipse facts.
In addition, Google has also dropped some hints about the name of Android O. The company shared a teaser video with the file name GoogleOreo_Teaser_0817_noDroids (1).mp4 on Google Plus. While we can't say for sure, the file name does suggest the Android O will be named Oreo.
It seems like the video was posted by mistake as it has been taken down since. Whatever the case is, we will get the answer to all our queries soon.
As far as the new features are concerned, the Android O is expected to bring notification channels, shortcut pinning, auto-fill, picture-in-picture, etc. Picture-in-picture mode is perhaps the most needed feature for YouTube and active YouTube app users. Using this mode will allow users to browse their smartphone even when the YouTube app window is open.
Besides this, the latest version of Android will provide a simplified and better-organized settings menu. While most of the smartphones have at least 20 settings tab with Android Nougat on their smartphones, O will slash the number of tabs to 12.
Other than that, Android O will also host a smarter text selection.
