Android Phone manufacturers could be lying about Security Updates

Despite Google's constant effort most of the vendors tend to skip on the occasional security patch for their devices

Google is known for releasing security updates timely to its devices and services. Despite Google's constant effort most of the vendors tend to skip on the occasional security patch for their devices and most of them are specific to the mid-range devices. The entry segment devices on the other hand hardly receive any regular security update let alone the OS updates. The smartphones with regular security patches and OS update are a big hit among the user and attracts the potential buyers.

As per some reports from the web, two cybersecurity analysts from Security Research Labs ( SRL) have made a claim that in most of the cases the security updates are not being pushed. It is being further reported that the companies who are boasting their sales on the factor that they will roll out timely updates are lying to its users.

The report further suggests that both the cybersecurity analysts Karsten Nohl and Jakob Lell had reached this conclusion after they examined around 1200 smartphones from the manufacturers including Google, Samsung, Sony, Nokia, Huawei, Motorola, LG, HTC, ZTE and TCL in 2017.

As per Nohl and Lell most of the companies are either not rolling out the updates on time, or are simply lying regarding the fact that a latest security update has been installed. The tech giants like Samsung and Sony were found to have missed on one patch on an average basis, whereas other brands like TCL and ZTE were reported to have missed on an average of four more security patches. Google Pixel devices, on the other hand, didn't skip on any update and were the only devices to be on that list which were immune to this issue.

However most of the manufacturers also often lie regarding the date of a security update by making the changes in the codes. These codes which are changed shows that a user's phone is up to date with the latest updates which actually are the old update that has been renamed. This seems to be unfair as the users are kept in the dark regarding the security updates. The companies need to fix this issue and need to roll out genuine security updates for their devices so that their user base feels secure while using the devices
