Apple could release VR headsets in 2020 featuring 16K display

Most of you might have an idea that Apple has been promoting applications around AR with its recent iPhones and iPads, however, as per some reports from CNET, Apple is working on manufacturing headset that could handle both AR and VR.

The report further mentions the project that is internally referred to as 'T288' and was hinted in some of the reports back in 2017. It was also rumoured that headset could be powered by an iOS-based specialized operating system which is named as 'rOS'.

As per CNET, a familiar source had quoted that Apple is planning on releasing the AR/VR enabled device in 2020, and will also offer some specs which are until now not seen on any of the production head-mounted (HMD). This is speculated to include two 8K displays, one for each eye, which counts to a total of 16K resolution. It might be hard to believe at first, however knowing the fact that Apple is working on its own MicroLED displays this should not come as a surprise.

Further, the device is also said to ship as un-tethered and is believed to connect wirelessly to a dedicated 'box' by making use of high-speed short-range wireless technology which will be called 60 GHz WiGig. Google is also working towards developing a VR headset with high resolution 120 Hz display that will be released by the Cupertino tech giant next month. However, there is no information if this would be dedicated to hardware made by Google or as one of its OEM partners.

The report further sheds some light on what a user can expect from the setup, by stating that the 'box' would be powered by a custom 5nm processor that is said to be 'more powerful than anything currently available' in the market, and it is said to be similar to the in-house chip that would be powering the future MacBooks. Apple currently designs its own logic chips for iPhones and iPads and is also speculated to be looking to manufacture its own power-management chips for its devices. However, Apple has not yet commented on the subject and we are expecting a response by Apple on the same.
