Bulk SMS, MMS Banned for 15 Days by Govt: A Step to Kill Rumors!
The Indian government has imposed a ban on bulk SMSes and MMSes across the nation for the next 15 days, starting today. This decision is in order to curtail the SMSes and MMSes spreading rumors, that mislead information about the violence in Assam.
It was found that these messages contain fabricated clips and threats to the northeasterners living in other cities across the country, resulting in a panicky situation.
During this 15 day period of the ban, it will not be possible for one to send over five SMSes or over 20 KB data at a time from the same mobile number.
The Union home secretary RK Singh said “We have banned bulk SMSs and MMSs for 15 days and any miscreant fanning rumours should be brought to book.”
As per the reports, the Home Ministry has ordered the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to implement this order throughout all the telecom operators in India.
The ban on the bulk SMS and MMS came into effect after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that the rumors were spread by miscreants, leading to a majority of North East Indians to flee away from Bangalore, Pune and other cities of the country.
