ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok Are Down for Users Worldwide in a Rare Triple AI Outage

If ChatGPT, Claude, or Grok suddenly stopped cooperating with you today, it probably isn't your internet connection. All three major AI platforms are facing outages on September 3, with users across multiple regions reporting failed responses, error messages, and services refusing to load properly.

Downdetector data shows sharp spikes in reports for OpenAI, Claude, and Grok on September 3. Interestingly, Google Gemini has also seen a rise in complaints, although its spike is considerably smaller than the other three.

It is an unusual sight. Individual AI services going down isn't particularly surprising anymore, but having ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok all run into trouble within a similar window is much harder to ignore.

ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok Are Down for Users Worldwide

Claude, ChatGPT, and Grok have confirmed problems

OpenAI has officially acknowledged elevated errors affecting both ChatGPT and Codex. The company says it has already applied a mitigation and is currently monitoring the recovery, so things may start returning to normal for some users.

Anthropic is dealing with a broader issue on its side. Its status page currently shows a partial outage affecting Claude.ai, the Claude API, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. The company says elevated errors are affecting multiple models, including Mythos/Fable 5.1, Mythos/Fable 5, Opus 5, Opus 4.8, and Opus 4.6. Anthropic has identified the cause and says it is continuing to work on a fix.

Grok isn't having a particularly good day either. X's status page confirms an outage affecting Grok on the web, with the company saying it is investigating the issue and working to restore service. A separate incident is also affecting Grok on Android. The Downdetector data lines up with those official acknowledgements. OpenAI, Claude, and Grok all show noticeable jumps in user reports around the same period, with Claude and Grok seeing especially sharp spikes.

Gemini also shows a smaller bump in outage reports. Google hasn't confirmed a widespread Gemini outage, though, so for now it looks like the service is considerably less affected than the other three. 9to5Google similarly notes that Gemini has seen an increase in reports without an official outage being declared.

What caused all three AI services to go down?

That is the big question, and right now there isn't a confirmed answer.

The timing has naturally raised speculation that there may be some shared infrastructure problem behind the outages. 9to5Google points out that Microsoft Azure also saw a spike in outage reports around the same time, and all three companies make use of Azure services in some capacity.

However, there is no official confirmation that Azure is responsible for the ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok outages. These platforms also rely on complicated infrastructure spread across multiple providers, so a similar outage window doesn't necessarily mean they all broke for exactly the same reason.

For now, the safest conclusion is simply that several major AI platforms are having a rough evening at the same time.

The good news is that recovery efforts are already underway. OpenAI says it has applied a mitigation, while Anthropic and xAI are actively working on their respective issues. So if your AI assistant has decided to take an unscheduled break today, giving it a little time before trying again might be your best option.
