FASTag: Indian Government Pushes Mandatory Roll Out Date To December 15
FASTags were announced by the Indian government as part of easing the vehicle flow on highways. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had announced that all vehicles need to get the FASTag with a deadline set for December. The FASTag collects tolls electronically across all the highways. Now, the deadline has been pushed forward to December 15.
FASTag Date Postponed
NHAI has announced that the date has been postponed to provide the citizens some time to buy and apply the FASTag on their vehicles. Moreover, users without the FASTag will be charged double the toll fees. The FASTag has now been postponed for another fifteen days.
The reports so far show that 73 lakhs tags have been sold after the initial announcement was made. The government says that the additional time will allow the citizens and the officials to streamline the preparations. "While we and banks have been able to push the sale of FASTags throughout the country, we need to see how people are successfully uploading the amount."
At the same time, the government and officials are addressing the concerns and queries raised by the people through the FASTag app. As part of the update, all the toll plaza lanes, except for one on each side will be declared as a FASTag lane from December 15.
What Is FASTag?
FASTag is an electronic payment of tolls, where sensors are installed at toll plazas across all highways in the country. Vehicles need to get a FASTag sticker, which will be stuck on the vehicle. The FASTag will be linked with the vehicle owner's bank account, in a tie-up with BHIM UPI. So, when a vehicle passes through an electric toll, the sensors will automatically detect the FASTag and deduct the amount from the bank account.
Users can update their details and bank information using the FASTag app. The additional fifteen-day time period allows the citizens some additional time to get FASTag, especially those who have still not got the FASTag card.
