FASTags With Incomplete KYC Set to Deactivate by January 31: Here’s How to Update Your KYC

The Ministry of National Highways has mandated the completion of the KYC (Know Your Customer) process for FASTag cards by January 31. Failure to comply with this directive will lead to the deactivation of FASTags, rendering the cards inactive.

Here's what you need to do.

FASTags With Incomplete KYC Set to Deactivate by January 31

What Happens Post Deactivation?

Upon deactivation, toll charges for vehicles without active FASTags are typically doubled, and penalties may be imposed for malfunctioning tags. Understanding the importance of FASTag and its functionality is crucial to avoid such inconveniences.

The Reason Behind the Deadline

Despite widespread FASTag adoption, the issuance of multiple FASTags for a single vehicle has led to unnecessary delays at toll plazas. To address this, the government aims to curb such practices by discouraging the use of a single FASTag for multiple vehicles. Duplication issues arise from the issuance of FASTags without proper KYC, violating RBI mandates.

KYC Deadline: What Users Need to Do

To prevent deactivation or blacklisting, FASTag holders must ensure their KYC is complete on their latest received FASTag by January 31, 2024. Users can update their KYC details online through the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) FASTag portal or opt for an offline update by visiting the bank branch that issued the FASTag.

How to Update FASTag KYC Details

  1. Log in to the IHMCL FASTag portal.
  2. Navigate to "My Profile" and check KYC status.
  3. Click on the 'KYC' tab, select 'Customer Type,' and enter details using approved documents.
  4. Upload a passport-sized photo, confirm the declaration, and submit.
  5. KYC processing takes a maximum of seven working days.

Alternatively, users can visit the bank branch that issued the FASTag for an offline update, fill out a KYC update form, and submit the required documents.

How FASTag Operates

FASTag, a small sticker affixed to a vehicle's windscreen, operates on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, facilitating automatic electronic toll payments. With over 615 toll plazas nationwide, FASTag, linked to a vehicle's registration details, deducts toll fees from the associated digital wallet as the vehicle passes through a toll booth.

FASTag in Indian Vehicles

Since February 2021, the government has mandated FASTag for all commercial and personal four-wheelers, and it is a prerequisite for obtaining mandatory third-party motor insurance under The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Government data indicates that nearly 98% of Indian vehicles, encompassing over 8 crore users, are equipped with these digital toll payment cards.
