Google Home App Overhaul: Gemini Integration, Improved Nest Support, and Enhanced Camera Experience

Google has unveiled a significant update to its Google Home app, now powered by Gemini for Home. This revamped version offers a streamlined interface, better integration with Nest devices, and enhanced natural language controls.

The app's foundation has been improved for speed and reliability. On some Android devices, the app loads over 70% faster than before. Users will experience fewer bugs and crashes, which have decreased by nearly 80% in recent months. Additionally, battery consumption and memory usage have been optimised.

Enhanced Camera Experience

For those using cameras, live views are now 30% quicker to load, with playback failures reduced by 40%. Camera tile previews appear instantly, and scrolling through camera history is smoother with a frame rate more than six times higher.

The new app also brings an upgraded camera experience. Notifications on Android and iOS now expand to show animated previews directly from the lock screen. Inside the app, gestures allow users to easily navigate their timeline or event lists. The camera can now provide specific alerts like "Robin walking with flowers," offering more detailed context.

Unified Nest Integration

The best features of the Nest app are now integrated into the Google Home app, eliminating the need for multiple apps. Support includes all Nest Thermostat models since 2015, smoke and CO alerts for Nest Protect, and passcode management for the Nest x Yale Lock.

Controlling older generations of Nest cameras and doorbells is now more efficient within the Home app. Higher frame rates make event scanning smoother, while video encoding adjustments ensure even older devices load faster and more reliably.

Simplified Design with Gemini

The redesigned app is intuitive, placing Gemini for Home's capabilities at users' fingertips. It features a three-tab layout for easy navigation through key home areas.

The Home Tab provides an overview of your entire home setup. New gestures enable single-hand use to swipe between Favorites, all devices, and dashboards without switching tabs.

Activity & Automations Tabs

The Activity Tab consolidates all home events from connected devices into one history. Here, users can access Home Brief for daily summaries.

The Automations Tab includes a carousel displaying upcoming automations. A rebuilt editor on iOS and Android allows creating one-time automations or conditional routines that activate only when someone is home.
