Google Launches Safety Charter In India To Enhance User Safety And Combat Online Threats With AI

Google has introduced its Safety Charter for India to guide India's AI-driven transformation. This initiative aims to tackle online threats by eliminating vulnerabilities in enterprise software and bridging the gap between attackers and defenders. The charter is structured around three main themes: user safety, cybersecurity, and responsible AI.

Online scams in India are becoming more sophisticated, with a notable increase in cyber fraud. Scammers now use advanced techniques like AI-generated content, deep fake videos, and voice cloning to execute convincing fraudulent schemes. Reports indicate that UPI-related frauds alone could cost Indians over INR 1087 crore in 2024. Industry estimates suggest potential losses of up to ₹20,000 crore by 2025 if these issues remain unaddressed.

Enhancing User Awareness and Resilience

The DigiKavach campaign plays a crucial role in building user awareness against online fraud in India. It has reached 177 million users, educating them about common scams. Google has partnered with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) to further strengthen efforts towards user awareness on cybercrimes over the coming months.

In 2024, Google took significant measures to combat fraudulent activities by removing 247 million ads and suspending 2.9 million accounts for policy violations. Their Financial Services Verification policy ensures advertisers comply with regulations, significantly reducing fraudulent financial ads.

Advanced AI Integration for Enhanced Security

Google's integration of advanced AI technologies, including large language models (LLMs), has improved scam detection capabilities. This advancement allows Google to identify 20 times more scammy pages before they can cause harm. Globally, targeted protections have reduced impersonation attacks on customer service or government sites by over 80% and 70%, respectively.

Google Messages now offers enhanced protection from scam texts using AI-powered Scam Detection. This feature protects users from over 500 million suspicious messages monthly and issues more than 2.5 billion warnings about opening URLs from unknown senders.

Comprehensive Protection Across Platforms

Globally, Google Play Protect scans over 100 billion installed apps daily for malware across billions of devices. Since its pilot launch in October 2024 in India, it has blocked nearly 6 crore (60 million) attempts to install high-risk apps on over 13 million devices.

Google Pay has displayed warnings against transactions suspected of being potential scams, safeguarding Indian users with over 4.1 crore (41 million) alerts. Gmail automatically blocks more than 99.9 percent of spam, phishing, and malware globally, protecting over 2.5 billion inboxes.

Google's products are designed with security at their core to protect individuals, businesses, and governments alike. By sharing expertise and continuously advancing cybersecurity measures, Google aims to secure the foundation of India's digital economy through trust.

The Safety Charter represents Google's commitment to leveraging AI's potential for securing India's digital landscape while encouraging collaboration within the wider ecosystem. Safety is a shared responsibility; Google remains dedicated to sharing its expertise towards this collective effort.
