Google to launch new messaging solution Chat to take on iMessage
Not to confuse Chat with Google Chat.
Google has been working on a universal messaging solution for Android platforms, and it seems like the company is finally close. As reported by Verge, the company plans to come up with a messaging solution called "Chat" that will take on Apple's iMessage. With Chat, the search engine giant is looking to replace the traditional SMS altogether.

Do note that Chat is not a new texting app. Instead of making an entirely new app, Google will integrate Chat into Android Messages, which comes by default in devices running Android OS. The company has also thought about involving Rich Communication Services (RCS) and carriers across the world.
With RCS technology, Google will enable typical messaging without SMS. Chat services will use data plans and feature more advanced functionality like read receipts, typing indicators, group texts, and photo and video support. Other expected features include GIF and stickers support.
However, Chat "is a carrier-based service, not a Google service". What's interesting is that Google will roll out the new messaging solution in near future, but users will only get it after their carriers enable it.
As stated, Chat will work like iMessage. Chat messages will be sent using data plans not SMS plans. If the receiver's phone doesn't have Chat, the messages will revert back to SMS to ensure the message is delivered.
All these sound great, but Google's Chat will have a major drawback. The new messaging solution will not come with end-to-end encryption, which could prove to be a deal-breaker for many considering the recent privacy concerns.
Without encryption, anyone from authorities to hackers could intercept the messages. Many messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram and even Apple's iMessage support end-to-end encryption.
Google could launch the Chat in the coming months, but no specific timeline is mentioned in the report. If everything works in Google's favor and the carries agree to support the platform, Chat could see the light of day as early as fall. It will be interesting to see if Apple will support the messaging solution. However, chances are pretty slim.
