HP: First Version of WebOS in beta Goes Open Source

Back in 2011, Hewlett-Packard informed the tech media world that it is open sourcing WebOS and the Enyo application framework. Now the American hardware and software manufacturer is all set to release the beta version of open source webOS platform. With the release of this beta version two environments will be made available for developers.

New development environments

The first environment is the desktop build with which HP promises to provide the ideal development environment for the designing of WebOS user experience. Desktop build integrates other open source technologies and arrives with a range of advanced features. A few of the new features included in the environment are support for core apps like contacts and calendar along with support for third party Enyo apps.

The second environment that will be released for developers is the OpenEmbedded build. This environment is meant for porting WebOS to new devices. An ARM emulator arrives as part of this environment to facilitate running of db8 and node.js services. HP mentioned that it included the OpenEmbedded environment attributed to its widespread adoption in the community and support for embedded platforms.

The beta release

The beta version of Open webOS platform includes 54 webOS components that will be available in open source. The new version will incorporate 450,000 lines of code that will be released under Apache 2.0 license.

HP had faced a lot of criticism when the open source web OS was first announced last year. Skeptics accused HP of not having a proper plan for the platform.

The beta release of the platform is being counted as an answer to such criticisms. HP claimed that a lot of work has gone behind the release of Open webOS for developers. HP has not confirmed any specific date on which the OS will be released although we know that it will happen in September itself.
