India Rolls Out Chip-based e-Passports To Enhance Travel Security
In a significant advancement towards strengthening the security of Indian passports, the Ministry of External Affairs has introduced e-passports under the Passport Seva Programme (PSP) Version 2.0, which began back on April 1, 2024. This initiative represents a critical step in modernizing passport services and enhancing the integrity and safety of Indian citizens' travel documents.
India Rolls Out E-Passports
The e-passport, a blend of traditional paper passport and advanced electronic features, incorporates a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Chip and an antenna. These components are embedded within the passport booklet, securely storing the passport holder's personal and biometric data. A noticeable feature of the e-passport is a small gold-colored symbol on the front cover, making it easily identifiable.

This innovative passport design aims to substantially reduce the risks associated with passport forgery and identity theft. The e-passport's key advantage lies in its dual storage of data in both printed form and on an electronic chip. The chip's data is digitally signed, allowing for secure authentication by global immigration officials. This dual-layer of security ensures the passport's authenticity and protects against fraudulent activities such as the creation of fake passports.
Supporting the e-passport's security features is the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) solution. This technology serves as the backbone for protecting sensitive information, confirming the authenticity and integrity of the data stored on the chip. Through PKI, the biometric and personal data embedded in the e-passport can be accurately verified, providing an additional layer of security for the passport holder.
Initially, e-passports are being issued in select cities across India, including Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Delhi, Goa, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Nagpur, Raipur, and Ranchi. This rollout marks the first phase of the e-passport initiative, aiming to revolutionize how passport services are provided and enhancing the security measures of travel documents.
The government's long-term plan involves extending the issuance of e-passports to all Passport Seva Kendras nationwide by mid-2025. This expansion strategy underscores the government's commitment to adopting advanced technologies for public services, ensuring that Indian citizens have access to secure, reliable, and efficient passport services.
