India’s UPI Services Begin Rolling Out in Sri Lanka and Mauritius: All You Need to Know
On Monday, India's Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services made their debut in Sri Lanka and Mauritius. The move was described by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a fusion of historical ties with contemporary digital technology.
The virtual launch ceremony also included the introduction of India's RuPay card services in Mauritius, attended by Prime Minister Modi, his Mauritian counterpart Pravind Jugnauth, and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

How UPI Services Will Benefit Sri Lanaka, Mauritius?
Modi emphasized the transformative potential of the new fintech services, stating that UPI is taking on "new responsibilities of uniting partners with India." In his address, Prime Minister Modi framed the occasion as a momentous day for the Indian Ocean Region's friendly nations, highlighting the intersection of longstanding connections with modern digital advancements.
He expressed optimism about the benefits Sri Lanka and Mauritius would derive from the UPI system, underscoring the revolutionary impact of digital public infrastructure in India and reiterating the country's commitment to a "neighbourhood first policy."
The launch is strategically aligned with New Delhi's deepening economic relationships with Sri Lanka and Mauritius. UPI settlement services are now available for Indian nationals traveling to these countries and vice versa.
Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI facilitates instant real-time inter-bank transactions through mobile phones. RuPay, India's global card payment network, enjoys broad acceptance at shops, ATMs, and online platforms.
