Indian Railways Announces Major Upgrades to IRCTC for Easier Ticket Booking
Indian Railways is taking significant steps to improve the ticket booking experience on the IRCTC platform. In response to ongoing user frustrations, the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is planning major upgrades to both its website and mobile app.
These changes aim to resolve persistent technical issues and streamline the overall booking process.

The Shift to Online Ticket Booking
Train travel remains a popular choice in India, especially for long-distance journeys. As a result, the traditional practice of booking tickets at railway station counters is declining. More passengers now prefer the convenience of online bookings through the IRCTC platform. However, this shift has brought new challenges.
Many passengers who rely on the IRCTC website or app to book tickets often face difficulties during the process. These issues range from slow load times to payment failures, which can be frustrating, especially when trying to book Tatkal tickets. The delays in moving from one page to another after entering passenger details have been a major pain point.
Major Capacity Increase Planned
In response to these challenges, Indian Railways has announced plans to significantly upgrade the IRCTC's ticket booking capacity. Currently, the platform can handle 25,000 bookings per minute. With the planned upgrades, this capacity will increase to 2.25 lakh bookings per minute. This substantial improvement is expected to ease the booking process, particularly during peak times.

IRCTC Chairman Sanjay Jain highlighted that the existing booking capacity is insufficient compared to the high demand. "The booking capacity is low compared to the number of passengers coming to book online tickets," he explained. On an average day, 9 lakh tickets are booked through the IRCTC platform, while 2 crore passengers travel by train across India.
Upcoming Improvements
Indian Railways is committed to finalizing these upgrades by March 2025. Once implemented, passengers can expect a smoother and faster ticket booking experience without the technical glitches that currently plague the system. Additionally, the IRCTC is working on resolving issues where money is deducted from passengers' accounts, but tickets are not issued. This will further enhance the reliability of the platform.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has also confirmed that both software and hardware upgrades will be rolled out to benefit passengers. These improvements are expected to transform the user experience on the IRCTC platform, making it more efficient and user-friendly.
Enhancing Passenger Experience
The decision to upgrade the IRCTC system reflects Indian Railways' commitment to meeting passenger expectations and improving services. As millions of train travelers across India await these changes, railway officials assure that the upgraded system will provide a much smoother ticket booking process in the future.
These enhancements are not just technical updates but a step towards making train travel more accessible and hassle-free for all passengers.
