India's $10 Billion Bet on Becoming a 6G Superpower—Here's How India Plans to Dominate the Next-Gen Tech

On Tuesday, at the Indian Mobile Congress 2024 (IMC), Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia announced that India is poised to become a global leader in 6G technology.

With a robust foundation laid by the widespread adoption of 4G and 5G, India's leap towards 6G under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's directive aims for inclusive progress and international collaboration in the tech space.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and spearheaded by efforts from Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, India is setting a benchmark in the global tech arena with its rapid strides towards achieving complete digital inclusivity and preparing for the advent of 6G technology.

"It is our belief and commitment that India, which followed the world in 4G and marched with it in 5G, will lead the world in 6G," Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia stated.

By building on the foundations of previous generations of telecommunications technology and focusing on comprehensive policy updates, India is not only aiming for widespread connectivity but also asserting its role as a leader in the future of global digital advancements.

Initiatives like the BharatNet program, designed to enhance rural broadband connectivity, are a testament to India's commitment to creating an extensive digital infrastructure. The transformation within India's telecommunications domain, particularly over the past decade, has been remarkable.

This commitment is further underscored by the investment of over USD 10 billion in the last three years to expand rural broadband connectivity, which has significantly increased the number of mobile and broadband connections.

The country now has over 1.16 billion mobile connections, up from 94 million, and broadband connections have also surged to 924 million from 60 million. Furthermore, the expansion of India's optical fibre network from 11 million kilometres to an impressive 41 million kilometres marks a significant stride towards achieving digital inclusivity.

India's Digital Economy and Telecommunication Policies

Emphasizing the pillars of India's digital economy, Scindia highlighted the role of digital payment systems, the 4G stack, and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in bolstering the country's position in the global digital landscape. These technological advancements not only facilitate seamless transactions but also contribute significantly to the global digital infrastructure.

In response to the dynamic evolution of the digital world, the Indian government has proactively revised its policy frameworks, including the Telecommunications Act 2023. These revisions cater to emerging sectors such as satellite communications while prioritizing cybersecurity. Such updates ensure India remains at the cutting edge of telecommunication technology, prepared to embrace future innovations securely.

Moving Towards 100% 4G Coverage and 6G Ambitions

Scindia's announcement that India aims to achieve 100% 4G coverage across the nation, including its most remote villages, by the middle of next year reflects the country's dedication to digital inclusivity.
