Telecom Regulator TRAI has issued a statement asking the telecom service providers across India to de-activate ISD calling facility for pre-paid subscribers.
The ISD calling facility will be restored only up on customer’s request. The new directions by TRAI is expected to be a huge relief for customers who were complaining about receiving SMS from international numbers claiming their number to have won prizes or money, prompting users to make call to such numbers.
But the latest direction can also affect users who regularly use ISD facility to call family and friends residing abroad. TRAI has asked interested users to claim the ISD availing facility within 60 days of the date of issue of this statement.
The directive from TRAI stated, “Inform all pre-paid subscribers having ISD facility, through SMS, within 10 days of the date of issue of this direction, that ISD Facility of the subscribers shall be discontinued after sixty days.” It also added, “If such subscribers want to continue with ISD facility, they should give their explicit consent for availing such facility within 60 days of the receipt of the SMS.”
The latest directions from TRAI came after a series of complaints were registered regarding receiving of missed calls from international phone numbers, considered to be premium numbers charging heavily on customers calling those numbers. TRAI is on the observation that there is no need for consumers to pay these unintended charges.
TRAI has also issued a directive asking consumers not to respond to any messages claiming that they have won prize or lottery. As part of this latest directive, TRAI has asked telecom service providers to send SMS to consumers within 10 days to inform them about this latest move. TRAI has also asked the service providers to provide consumers with an easier choose-in and choose-out feature for activating and deactivating the ISD calling facility.
