Meta to Begin Laying off Employees Starting Today
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, is set to initiate a new round of layoffs. Employees will begin receiving notices today, signaling a significant workforce reduction that is set to impact various regions worldwide, including the United States.
The layoffs are part of a broader strategy to enhance efficiency within Meta. The company aims to focus on key areas while trimming down less critical segments. This move is expected to affect thousands of employees globally, reflecting the company's commitment to maintaining financial stability in a competitive market.

Meta's Strategic Shift
Despite the global scale of the layoffs, employees based in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands will not be affected due to the protective measures offered by local labor laws. This exemption contrasts with the situation in over a dozen countries across Europe, Asia, and Africa, where employees will be informed of their status from February 11 to February 18. This geographical differentiation underscores the complexities of implementing workforce reductions across different legal jurisdictions.
Amidst this restructuring, Meta is concurrently ramping up its recruitment of machine learning engineers, highlighting a strategic shift towards enhancing its technological capabilities.
Meta has previously articulated plans to reduce its workforce by around 5%, focusing on eliminating positions held by what it describes as "lowest performers." This move is part of a broader strategy to streamline operations and redirect resources towards more critical areas of its business. Notably, the company has labeled these dismissals as "performance terminations," a phrasing that underscores the performance-based criteria underpinning these decisions.
In an internal memo, Janelle Gale, Meta's Head of People, outlined the logistics of the layoff process, distinguishing it from previous reduction efforts by opting to keep company offices open on Monday and withholding further details about the layoff decisions. This approach indicates a departure from Meta's past practices during workforce reductions.
Simultaneously, Meta is actively seeking to bolster its engineering departments, particularly those focused on monetization and machine learning. Peng Fan, the company's VP of Engineering for Monetization, issued a memo urging employees to support the accelerated recruitment process. This initiative, running from February 11 to March 13, aims to attract top talent in machine learning engineering and other crucial engineering roles, reflecting Meta's commitment to advancing its technological infrastructure amidst organizational changes.
