Microsoft files patent for iPhone companion device that double functions as a speaker
The device would come with both wired and wireless connectivity support via Bluetooth.
Microsoft may have bid goodbye to Windows Phones, but it seems like the company doesn't want to step away from the mobile world just yet.
In the past few months, we have come across several evidences that suggest the software giant is working on a mobile device (likely to be a Surface Phone). Every now and again, new patents for the devices filed by Microsoft comes up online. Yet again, the company has filed a patent on USPTO that shows a peripheral device named "User Input Peripheral".
As reported by MSPU, this device would function as a companion device for Apple's iPhone, allowing users to make easier and faster phone calls. The patent further describes, the "User Input Peripheral" would serve as a phone dock for the iPhones. It will also function as a VoIP speaker, with built-in features such as speakers and microphones.
Moreover, the device would come with both wired and wireless connectivity support via Bluetooth. It would also feature notification lights as well as buttons to quickly perform various tasks including answering a phone call or opening Skype. The device would be accompanied by a Lighting connector to communicate with the iPhone.
Needless to say, such a device would bring help bridge the gap between iPhones and Windows 10 PCs, which could help Microsoft to get a foothold in the mobile industry. Until the time, a new Surface Phone is launched, the company would definitely like to gain some attention from the mobile users across the world.
While a patent doesn't necessarily mean that Microsoft will go ahead with the project, it gives us an idea about the kind of technologies the company is experimenting with or intend to do in the future.
It should also be noted that the drawings in the patent appear to be in an advanced stage indicating the Redmond-based tech giant may bring it to the consumers. As for now, we don't have any option but to wait to see whether any such device eventually comes to life.
In related news, a Windows Phone prototype with Surface Phone was recently spotted online. You can check the story here.
