Microsoft is Paying Employees to Leave Voluntarily: What the New Offer Means

Microsoft has introduced a new Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) for eligible employees in India and other countries, giving them the option to leave the company with financial support and career planning resources. In simpler words, Microsoft is paying its existing employees to leave the company and seek employment elsewhere.

So why is this happening and what happens when an employee turns down the offer? Read on.

Microsoft is Paying Employees to Leave The Company: Here's Why

What is Microsoft's voluntary exit offer?

The Voluntary Exit Offer is a time-limited programme that allows eligible employees to leave Microsoft in exchange for financial support and career planning resources.

Unlike a compulsory layoff, employees can choose whether to accept the offer. Microsoft has said that the programme is available only to employees in participating organisations, so not everyone working at the company will be eligible.

According to a report by GeekWire, around 60,000 employees could be eligible for the offer, which is roughly a quarter of Microsoft's global workforce. The offer also extends to some senior employees, going up to level 70 on the company's internal scale.

Microsoft Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced the programme in a blog post on October 26. She said the offer gives employees who may be considering a future outside the company another way to make that transition, while allowing participating teams to adjust to changing workforce needs.

The company has not shared a single fixed payout amount for all employees. According to GeekWire, the package is equivalent to Microsoft's standard severance terms and depends on factors such as an employee's internal level, tenure and location.

The offer includes base pay based on these factors, continued stock vesting, healthcare coverage for a fixed period and career transition services. Eligible employees are expected to receive an email with their individual offer details.

How much money will Microsoft employees get?

The payout varies depending on an employee's level and length of service. A report by India Today, citing Business Insider, says employees at level 64 and below are being offered one week of base pay for every six months of service. Employees at levels 65 to 67 are being offered two weeks of base pay for every six months of service.

The report also says standard severance for employees at level 67 and below is capped at 39 weeks of base pay. Employees at level 68 are offered a package equivalent to 12 months of salary. These figures should not be treated as a fixed payout for every employee, as the final terms depend on individual circumstances and location.

The package also includes continued stock vesting and health insurance. For employees at level 67 and below, stock vesting may continue for six or 12 months, depending on their years of service. GeekWire reports that the offer includes healthcare coverage for a fixed period, but does not include the extended healthcare benefits that were part of Microsoft's earlier voluntary retirement programme.

Is Microsoft planning more layoffs?

The voluntary exit offer comes after Microsoft cut around 4,800 jobs in July 2026, or roughly 2% of its global workforce, followed by further job cuts in September. The company also reduced its workforce by more than 15,000 employees in 2025. Naturally, this has left people wondering if more layoffs are in store.

For now, Microsoft has said the new offer is not a replacement for layoffs. The company will continue to make workforce decisions based on business conditions and changing priorities. The offer also does not mean that employees who decline it will automatically be laid off.

The company has not said that refusing the offer would put an employee's job at risk, nor has it guaranteed that those who turn it down will be protected from future restructuring. The voluntary programme and a compulsory layoff are separate processes, and Microsoft has not indicated that rejecting the current offer will lead to a subsequent job cut.

Finally, it is worth noting that this is also not Microsoft's first voluntary exit programme in 2026. In April, the company introduced a voluntary retirement programme for around 8,750 US employees who met specific age and service requirements. More than 30% of eligible employees reportedly accepted the offer.
