Microsoft takes on Google Lens with its 'Snip Insights' tool
The Snip Insights will be able to pull text even from the images of documents, books, billboard and receipts by making use of the company's own Cloud AI services.
Microsoft is releasing Snip Insights tool for the masses. As a part of Microsoft's project Garage, the new tool was released for its Windows platform. The new Snipping tool was developed by a team of interns at Microsoft. The tool works similar to the Google Lens, which had already received its set of updates following the Google I/O conference that was held recently.
The Snip Insights is an open source platform which is being hosted on Github. It is being reported that the new tool will allow the Windows users to get information and insights by using the screenshots a user has captured on Windows 10 devices. For example, a user can grab a screenshot of any object that they like on a website, following which the Snip Insight tool could search the web for the same object, and will present you with the best options available.
Microsoft further claims that the software will be able to pull text even from the images of documents, books, billboard and receipts by making use of the company's own Cloud AI services. The Cloud AI service can also convert images of text documents into editable text. Further, the Snip Insights can also distinguish famous personalities, places and landmarks, and provide the relevant information based on the image. Microsoft has used the same technology behind the Snip Insights as it has used in Azure Cognitive services.
Microsoft commented that " At Microsoft Vancouver, the curiosities of 7 interns were piqued by a pitch from the Cloud AI team. The intern team, composed of 5 developers, 1 designer, and 1 program manager, was challenged to re-imagine widely used tools that millions of users love through the capabilities of AI. Thus, Snip Insights was born".
This should not come as surprise to the users considering the fact that Microsoft had made several announcements related to AI, machine learning and Azure. The Snip Insights is an example of what the Redmond giant's Cognitive services can do. Also, more similar announcements can be expected in the coming days from the company, considering the race that is going on between the tech giants in releasing the latest technology.
